About This Pub
Ah, Dr Foster in Gloucester – what a gem it is, tucked away by the docks with that cosy Cotswolds charm shining through in every corner. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the place really shines with its friendly staff who make you feel right at home, whether you're just nipping in for a coffee or settling in for a full meal. The food menu is a delight, offering everything from hearty brunches to traditional British dinners with fresh local twists, and it's clear from the rave reviews that Sunday lunches and events like live music or pub quizzes add a fun layer to the experience. It's also brilliant for dog owners, as they welcome furry friends with open arms. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect – there have been a couple of grumbles about food inconsistencies, like a sharing platter that didn't quite live up to expectations or meat that wasn't cooked through as hoped, which might put off those after flawless service every time. Overall, with a solid 4.7 rating, I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area; just keep in mind it's that typical pub vibe where the good days far outweigh the odd off one, making it a reliable choice for a bite and a bevvy with mates.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly, helpful, and go the extra mile to make you feel welcome, like when they offered a tour or sorted out a water bowl for dogs.
-
The food is spot on, with tasty options from brunch to dinner, using local ingredients and classics like Sunday roasts that leave you wanting more.
-
It's got a lovely atmosphere by the Gloucester Docks, perfect for all-day dining or catching events like live music, quizzes, or brewery nights.
-
They're super dog-friendly, which is great if you're popping in with your furry mate, and the variety of drinks from craft beers to cocktails really hits the spot.
Cons
-
There can be the odd slip-up with food prep, like that disappointing sharing platter one chap mentioned, which sounded a bit of a mess and not up to scratch.
-
Some dishes might not always be cooked just right, as someone noted the pork being a tad pink near the bone, so it's worth double-checking if you're picky about that.

Wasn’t a good experience this visit at all. Ordered a £46 sharing platter and this is what arrived. The greens was actually put on the plate from someone else’s dish who’s doesn’t like them.
I’ve no idea where they got the idea of this dish. It’s an absolute car crash of a sharing platter. No salad or veg no dips or sauces. Just some meat and chips. The quality was ok. Nothing amazing. Not enough for two people. £18-£20 dish at tops.
There was 8 people and to be honest not one of us had anything that would make us want to go back again.
Real shame as I’ve always loved this pub.
I took my Dad to Gloucester for a meal out to celebrate his birthday. We weren't sure where we were going to eat so had a little wander around to see what the choices were. We came across Dr Foster purely by chance and noticed a lovely menu on the door. We decided to step inside and were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful and spacious it was. A member of staff saw us immediately and asked us if we were going to eat in. He then recommended we go into the conservatory area as it was such a lovely day. We were attended to very well and given advice on anything we queried. My Dad had a pint of stout and I originally asked for an elderflower tonic. The staff member said he also had an elderflower pressé which I then ordered. We both decided we wanted the steak and eggs. We both like it medium rare and the staff member agreed with our choice. Our meal turned up in a reasonable time and was presented beautifully. We were asked if we wanted any sauces. I asked for mayonnaise and was pleasantly surprised to have fresh made mayonnaise brought to the table. The steak was cooked to perfection and tasted incredible. The eggs were perfect and still had a nice runny yolk. The chunky chips were amazing too. I noticed that there were a couple of vegan options on the menu but nothing about gluten free so I asked our waiter and he confirmed that they can make the majority of the menu gluten free which is an added bonus as my husband is coeliac. In all it was a very enjoyable experience and I will certainly be going there again in the not too distant future.
The staff here were extremely helpful and friendly, we weren't sure where we wanted to sit (never been before) so he very kindly offered to give us a tour! Lovely little place, nice feel to it. Only had lunch but it was very nice and well presented. I would definitely go back again.. obviously had to check in at Dr Foster is Gloucester too :)
WOW what a fabulous place. We visited for Sunday lunch and it was so very tasty and there was plenty of it and plenty of extra gravy. The staff are so friendly and Ellie looked after us incredibly well. They are really dog friendly and welcomed our little dog and got him a water bowl. We simply cannot wait to return, this is our new favourite. Thanks Dr Fosters, you are ace. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The service was fantastic. Ellie was so helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble.
The food looked and tasted amazing, we had the Pork cutlet with a side of the charred cabbage and crumble for pudding.
Only down side, was near the bone in the pork was quite pink. Everything otherwise was spot on! Will definitely be back!
