About This Pub

Ah, the Crown & Anchor – it's one of those Brixton spots that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? I've heard from mates and seen in the reviews that it's been serving up a stellar selection of beers since 2011, with up to 25 taps offering everything from classic ales to exciting craft options, which really makes it stand out for anyone keen on exploring new brews. The food's another highlight; those Sunday roasts are legendary, packed with tender meat, veggies, and a massive Yorkshire pud that'll leave you stuffed and satisfied, and they've got some fun twists on Southern American dishes that add a bit of flair to the usual pub fare. The staff are genuinely lovely, always up for a chat and making sure you're looked after, and that outdoor terrace is brilliant for soaking up the sun with a glass in hand, especially with the park nearby. On the flip side, though, there have been a few grumbles about things like dogs causing a ruckus inside, which can put a damper on things if you're after a peaceful pint. Plus, the hours aren't the most flexible on Mondays, so you might find yourself waiting until later in the day to pop in. All in all, it's a solid choice for a night out – just keep an eye on the timings and maybe give them a ring if you're planning ahead. I'd say it's worth a visit for the beers alone, but go with the flow and you'll have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – up to 25 taps with a fantastic mix of ales, ciders, and craft brews from local and global spots, making it a real treat for anyone who loves a good pint.
  • The food hits the spot, especially the hearty Sunday roasts and those Southern American twists on pub classics; it's comforting and full of flavour, perfect for a relaxed meal.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home, and that outdoor terrace is a lovely spot to unwind with a drink while watching the world go by.
  • It's got a great buzz, especially in the evenings, and being next to a park adds a nice touch for those sunny days.
Cons
  • There can be occasional disruptions, like folks bringing dogs and letting them play inside, which isn't ideal and might spoil the vibe a bit.
  • Opening hours are a tad limited on quieter days, like Mondays starting at 4 pm, so it might not suit early birds or spontaneous visits.
  • While it's generally buzzing, it can get packed, meaning you might need to book ahead for food or a table, especially on weekends.

Nice pub, been before. There was an idiot with his dog and throwing the ball for them to catch inside the pub. Staff shouldn't be allowing such behaviour. This is a common issue with people bringing dogs into pubs these days. Not good

🚇 Stockwell 🍺 £6.50 Rothaus Pilsner The Crown & Anchor is located at the northern end of Brixton in South London. The nearest Tube is Stockwell. This Victorian pub was built in 1867 and occupies a corner plot that leads through to a park at the back of the pub. This pub has been open in its current guise since 2012 and is the sister pub of the Jolly Butchers in Stoke Newington. This is a long one bar pub that has a contemporary feel. The servery is located on the left and has a traditional counter. This is a bright and airy pub due to size of the windows which bathe the bar in light. The decor consists of a boarded floor, conventional furniture, exposed brickwork and light painted walls. To the side of the pub are a number of benches for imbibing alfresco. The beer line up offers a fantastic selection of premium lagers, local London brews and five cask ales. I decided on a Rothaus Pilsner, my pint hit the spot, price point was to be expected. The food menu changes from time to time, at present there are American comfort food options plus hearty roasts on a Sunday. I arrived just after 3pm on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon in August. There were about a dozen or so punters inside and a few lapping up the sun on the benches outside. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed, so settling in was easy. The service was excellent, the team on duty were welcoming and friendly. This laidback Brixton local is an enjoyable place to spend time in. The highlight for me was the range of beers on offer, the variety will please most palates and tempts you into trying something different. The surroundings were comfortable and the ambiance convivial. The @crown_anchorsw9 is well worth a look if you’re in the area. 📅 3rd August 2024 More London Pub info @londonpubmap 🍻

The Crown & Anchor 246 Brixton Road London SW9 6FA London Village Inns Ltd https://londonvillageinns.co.uk/ Big space indoors nicely laid out, next to park entrance, with ample outside accommodation. Great buzz at 6pm when we arrived, a busy engagement party and lots of people enjoying themselves, the way people should at a well run public house. Decent beer selection, too busy engage in conversation about the future of pubs and the @AllForTheLoveOfPubs podcast to take notice of the drinks menu. Kitchen looks well laid out, interestingly placed at the back of the pub with clear through route from the pass to the floor. Confidently done pub, staff all friendly, smiley and on the ball, and well informed about the business. Most of the cask beers had run out, because it had been so busy. Encouraging to see a pub business thriving and bucking the trend of spiral of decline to terminal oblivion of Britain's unique secular social construct that's engulfed the nation... We need to restore this Crooked House and start #SavingBritainsPubs at scale. This is what The Podcast from The Pub #AllForTheLoveOfPubs is going to be about

Popped in here for a Sunday roast after walking the entire Victoria tube line with friends. It sure was well worth it. Easy to spot and get to. Great service and the food was spot on. Ordered a G&T alongside it - perfect.

Wonderful Sunday roast, really packed plate - you won't be hungry afterwards! The lamb was lovely but the chicken was the star. The service was first class, really warm and friendly and excellent range of beers. Make sure you book ahead, it's very popular
