About This Pub

Ah, The Broad Chare – it's one of those pubs that just warms your cockles from the moment you step inside. I've heard from folks who've popped in that it's got that perfect mix of old-school charm and a modern twist, with well-kept beers and honest, no-fuss food that's earned it a spot in the Michelin Bib Gourmand hall of fame year after year. From what I've gathered from chats with others, the atmosphere is spot on for a relaxed evening or a bite with friends – think friendly service and a welcoming buzz that makes you feel right at home. On the upside, it's brilliant for trying out classic British dishes with a bit of flair, and they've got options that cater to different tastes, like gluten-free choices, which is a nice touch. But, fair's fair, it does get busy, so planning ahead is key if you don't fancy waiting around. And while most rave about the grub, some find the menu a tad experimental with things like unusual cuts of meat, so if you're not up for that, stick to the crowd-pleasers like the pork chop. All in all, it's a solid spot for a pint and a plate in Newcastle, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after a proper pub experience without any pretence.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on – they've got some cracking light ales that are just the ticket for a relaxed pint or two without overdoing it.
  • The food is proper British fare done to a tee; think hearty dishes like scotch eggs and pork chops that leave you feeling satisfied and coming back for more.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a genuine sense of good cheer that makes it feel like a cosy spot for catching up with mates or a special occasion.
  • Service is top-notch – the staff are friendly and attentive, adding to that homely vibe without being over the top.
  • It's family-friendly yet still maintains a classy edge, making it a versatile choice for different outings in Newcastle's Quayside.
Cons
  • It can get pretty packed, especially on weekdays, so you'll want to book ahead if you're set on dining in rather than just grabbing a drink at the bar.
  • Some menu items are a bit on the adventurous side, like pig ears or other quirky offerings, which might not suit everyone if you're after straightforward pub grub.

Nice place. But book if you want to dine in. We were there on a Monday and it was full, but the bar menu option was great. They serve some interesting light ales, around 4% alcohol, so you can have two pints.

I was in Newcastle upon Tyne for a conference in the Sage across the river from Broad Chare, and had a really beautiful meal there. Great atmosphere, good food options for gluten-free and lots of quirky dog accessories all around the restaurant. Would definitely book again next time I'm in Newcastle.

Great British food - done really well! Great service, selection of beers and non alcoholic drinks. Family friendly but classy. What a great asset to Newcastle's Quayside.

great atmosphere & staff, iffy menu selections! lots of weird foods. if you’d like to try pig ears/ heads, this is the place for you! on the flip side, the pork chop & scotch egg are great!

My wife and I made our first visit to The Broad Chare for lunch, upstairs in the dining room, to celebrate my birthday, and what an excellent choice we made. We decided to mark the occasion by having the T-bone steak to share - we realised that neither of us had ever had that cut before - and I can't imagine it could be better. The meat was perfectly cooked, the blue cheese salad was delicious, it was a memorable dish. The starters were excellent as well - can't say much about the desserts because all we were capable of by that stage was lemon sorbet each! When we arrived there was only one other table occupied, but it soon filled up and was a really good atmosphere. Staff were all friendly and efficient. A bit pricy, but it was a birthday lunch and definitely worth it!
