About This Pub

You know, when I think about the City Arms, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper gem in the heart of Manchester – a place where you can pop in for a pint and end up having a right good chat. The beer selection is spot on, especially the cask ales, which are always served in great nick, and the staff are absolute stars, full of stories and tips on what to try next. It's got that warm, cosy layout that makes you feel at home, whether you're there on a quiet afternoon or a lively evening. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – I've heard a few mates say the range of ales and ciders isn't as diverse as you'd hope, and it can sometimes feel a tad unwelcoming if you're new to the scene. Still, with all the positive vibes floating around, it's well worth swinging by if you're in the area, just to see what you think yourself.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer is always well-kept and in top condition, making it a real treat for ale lovers.
  • Friendly staff who are knowledgeable about drinks – they'll chat with you about whiskey or cask options like pros.
  • A cosy, traditional atmosphere that's perfect for relaxing and catching up with friends.
  • Overall, it's got a brilliant vibe that keeps people coming back, with plenty of positive buzz from visitors.
Cons
  • The selection of ales and ciders can feel a bit limited compared to other spots, which might disappoint if you're after variety.
  • It doesn't always come across as the most welcoming place straight away, so it might take a moment to settle in.

Disappointing selection of ales and ciders - I've seen other pubs not mentioned in the Good Beer Guide with better choice. Didn't feel particularly welcoming inside or out. Such a shame with it being on my namesake street.

I’m from Sweden! I’ve met bartender Allan four years ago and he always amaze me with his deliverance of whiskey! The history, the tastes and more. He has a great knowledge for beers as well. Go to this place and ask for Allan, he’s the greatest! The atmosphere here is also top notch! ✌️💪

A truly fun, cozy pub that was rockin’ on an early Friday afternoon. Full of groups of friends catching up over some fine ales. Rustic is an understatement. This place has seen its share of time and patrons. Young, friendly guy at the bar explained some of their cask options, of which there are many. Plenty of regular draft, too. An absolute classic of a pub that I fear will disappear based on the age of the clientele.
