About This Pub
Ah, the Chequers Inn – it's one of those gems tucked away in the lovely village of Stanton by Dale, just a short hop from Derby or Nottingham. I've got to say, it's got that warm, welcoming feel of a proper old-school pub, with its history stretching back to 1880 and a focus on serving up cracking homemade food and real ales. From what I've seen, the staff are dead friendly, making you feel right at home, and the Sunday roasts come highly recommended – think hearty portions that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank. Plus, if you're into the outdoors, their beer garden and new outdoor seating area are brilliant for a sunny afternoon, and it's fantastic for dog owners since they've got that top dog-friendly rep. On the flip side, though, it's a bit of a faff if you haven't booked for food, as one reviewer found out the hard way, and the hours aren't the most flexible, wrapping up fairly early most days. All in all, it's a solid spot for a relaxed pint or a meal with friends, especially if you're up for a walk in the surrounding countryside – just pop it in your diary to avoid any hitches!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Chequers Inn has that classic, cosy village pub vibe, with plenty of character and charm dating back to 1880 – it's just lovely for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
-
They're super dog-friendly, even coming second in the East Midlands for it, so it's perfect if you're out for a walk and want to pop in with your furry friend.
-
The food is spot on – think proper homemade meals and tasty Sunday roasts at reasonable prices, with glowing feedback on how welcoming the staff are.
-
There's a stunning outdoor area with a beer garden and picnic benches, ideal for enjoying a pint in the fresh air, especially after a countryside ramble.
-
They've got a touring caravan site on offer, which adds a nice touch if you're looking for a stay with great ales and grub right on site.
Cons
-
You have to pre-book for food, which can be a bit of a nuisance if you fancy a spontaneous meal – one chap was caught out and ended up a tad frustrated.
-
Their opening hours are a bit limited, like not starting until the afternoon on weekdays, so it might not suit early birds or those wanting a full-day outing.
-
While most reviews are rave, there was that one grumble about the service not quite hitting the mark, so it pays to plan ahead for a smooth visit.

Walked into the self proclaimed “proper pub” at 17.30 on a Thursday and found approximately 12 people inside, non of which were eating. I asked for the menu and was told that I have to pre book if I want food. Was annoyed that I’d already ordered a drink else I’d have walked out. A “proper pub” is friendly and accommodating. I expected better from a pub next to a touring and camping site. I’ll be staying elsewhere in the future. Don’t waste your journey stopping by this second rate “proper pub”!!!
We pre booked for Sunday Roast which happened to be on Mother’s Day.
The location is perfect with a huge car park. Great for Sunday walks with a drink at the end.
The girl on the bar was very welcoming and showed us to our table.
It wasn’t long until the tasty Sunday roast arrived, and it was fantastic.
Plenty of choice of beers on tap!
The owners of the pub are fantastic.
It’s a massive 5 stars from us.
Really nice friendly and cosy pub serving great ales and food at very reasonable prices. Added extra is they have a small camp site.
What a wonderful experience this place was, we were booked on the site behind the pub with a group of fantastic friends 😀.
The people running the pub and site could not have been more welcoming.
The food on both nights was fantastic and as the previous pictures show, please remember though to order in time it's worth it.
Lovely inside and brilliant beer garden.
Would highly recommend a stop here both caravans and motorhomes are welcome and only 10 minutes from the M1 for peace and quiet 🤫.
Would definitely recommend and will visit again.
Thankyou to all the staff for a great weekend.

The Fantastic group of friends we were with also helped ❤️
PS that's Ken 👌
A perfect village country pub...
We stayed at the Chequers Inn on one of their five camper van and caravan pitches. Site facilities are good with gravel areas, bark parking areas and an area of grass with picnic table for each pitch. Each has electric hook-up, plus there is drinking water and waste water/chemical disposal. Toilets are at the rear of the pub and remain open all night. There are no showers, but we knew this in advance so knew what to expect (book via the Pitch-up website).
What makes the stay so wonderful is the pub, the local villagers and the welcome given by everyone. Food and drink is first-class (pre-order evening meals before arrival) and a cosy evening is guaranteed. If you get the chance to see and meet Ken, even better!
Highly recommended and we are sure to stay again!
