About This Pub
Ah, Butley Ash – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its charming country vibe, nestled right near the Peak District, making it a brilliant spot after a good walk or cycle. I have to say, the food really stands out; you've got those hearty pub classics and fresh seasonal dishes that leave you satisfied and smiling, plus the staff go above and beyond to make sure you're looked after – it's that personal touch that makes a visit feel special. The atmosphere can be so cosy, especially in the beer garden on a sunny day or with festive decorations up, and it's clear why folks keep coming back for more. On the flip side, though, prices can be a bit steep, like forking out for drinks that might make you wince, and there have been a few grumbles about booking mix-ups or the place feeling a tad empty at times, which could put off those after a lively night. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after good grub and a welcoming spot, but it's worth weighing up the costs to make sure it suits your budget – I'd still recommend giving it a go for a proper pub experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious pub classics and seasonal specials that really hit the spot, like those signature burgers or a perfectly cooked steak.
-
Service is top-notch; the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's in a fantastic location near the Peak District, ideal for a post-walk pint or a relaxing afternoon in the beer garden.
-
The atmosphere is cosy and inviting, especially during the festive season or on a sunny day, with a real community feel to it.
Cons
-
Drinks can be quite pricey, like shelling out £15 for a pint and a vodka – it might make you think twice before ordering another round.
-
There have been some hitches with table bookings, which can put a dampener on things if you're planning a group get-together.
-
The place can feel a bit quiet on certain nights, like a dead Friday evening, so it might not always buzz with energy.
-
While the food's generally great, it's not cheap, and you might find the overall value doesn't quite match up for everyone.

The experience was flawless! The food was delicious, the service by Emma was exceptional, and the cost was very reasonable. I couldn’t praise the pub enough. I will definitely visit again soon.
We went here last night about 18:00. It is a lovely country traditional pub. We had the signature Burgers that came with chips and onion rings and it was fantastic, We also had bakewell tart for dessert which was good. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Its not cheap but you get what you pay for , and i would highly recommend it.
Called here on a sunny friday night, and it was absolutely dead. After ordering drinks at the bar i understand why...£15 for a pint of lager and a vodka (single)and diet coke. Mental pricing, to the point where when i went back to order average food I actually questioned if I'd been charged right haha. Scandalous. To put into context, I visited another pub locally after and the same round (brands as well) was £11. £4 difference for exactly the same round is a joke. No wonder nobody is there.
Food was really good as were the desserts we all enjoyed it and we were 10 in number, the place was clean and tidy and had a good atmosphere, the waitress was very nice and very informative.
Unfortunately thats where the good things end.
Firstly my table booking for 10 people was not booked in even though I spoke directly to a person it was not through a booking system.
Fortunately the restaurant was very quiet so they were able to fit us in.
We were informed that due to our non-booking! there would be extra time to wait for our food and that they would serve a table of two and a table of seven before us!
We were not in any haste so we were ok with that even though we didn’t see the reason for the table of seven to be served before us.
Finally after an hour they came to take our order it was good Friday and we were informed the fish on the special board along with crab was not available.
About 45 mins later our meals appeared but one meal had been missed off.
When we asked about it they came and apologised and said it would not be on the bill which is great customer service but it was a poor mistake in the first place.
The missing meal when it arrived had the wrong potatoes, which once again informed they brought out a few minutes later.
We ordered several rounds of drinks all came quickly and efficiently until the last drinks which did not arrive at all so by then we just wanted to go so asked for the bill and cancelled the last drinks.
All in all the food was lovely but too many mistakes were made, mix up with our booking, we waited far too long for our food neatly two hours, then it was wrong.
Not really good enough seen as there were only four tables occupied at the time we were there.
Such a shame because we all wanted to love it.
Great place. Felt really festive as well with the decorations. Staff were so great and helpful, and the food was well tasty. I can honestly say the steak was the nicest I had in a long time, even better than the one I reviewed only a few weeks ago 😊👍. I will be back for more. The desert was amazing.
