About This Pub

Ah, the Builders Arms, what a lovely little find in New Barnet! From what I've gathered chatting about it with folks, it's got that perfect pub charm – you know, the kind where the staff greet you with a smile and make you feel like you're among mates. The atmosphere is just spot on, with a cosy interior that's intimate without being cramped, and that beer garden is an absolute winner, whether you're basking in the sunshine or huddled in the cabin on a chilly evening. Drinks-wise, they've nailed it with quality cask ales, a cracking range of spirits, and even thoughtful choices for those watching their intake, all at prices that won't break the bank. Live music and space for functions add a nice touch for when you fancy a bit more excitement. On the flip side, it can sometimes feel a bit subdued, especially on quieter days, and being hidden away means you might miss it if you're not in the know. Still, that's part of its appeal – a peaceful retreat from the hustle, though the nearby building work has cropped up in a few chats as a minor nuisance. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone after a genuine, down-to-earth pub experience, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for a pint and a chat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a lovely cosy and intimate vibe inside, paired with a spacious beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun or enjoying a cosy spot in cooler weather.
  • They serve up tasty drinks at reasonable prices, including excellent cask ales, a great selection of gins and whiskies, and even some top-notch low-alcohol options.
  • Live music events and the option for functions make it a brilliant spot for a night out or a special gathering.
  • The food sounds spot on – home-cooked pub grub that's family-friendly and available in a charming garden setting during warmer months.
Cons
  • It can be a bit quiet at times, like on a Sunday afternoon, which might make it feel a tad empty if you're after a lively buzz.
  • Tucked away in a side road, it might not be the easiest place to stumble upon unless you're specifically looking for it.
  • There's mention of nearby construction that could affect the atmosphere occasionally, though it hasn't put off the regulars.

Incredibly friendly staff & welcoming atmosphere, more so than other pubs I’ve visited locally. Very cosy and intimate, but also wide open garden space so seems perfect for all seasons. Tasty drinks, reasonable prices, will definitely be back to try some food too next time!

A cosy pub with a beer garden. I visited there on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty empty. A great shame. This could be to do with the large block of flats being built on the other side of the narrow lane, which the council saw fit to designate a "pit lane" so all the site deliveries are unloaded there, leaving customers to squeeze their way through (not the case on Sunday when the developers aren't working). Apparently it has affected trade for the pub. Anyway, it's a nice pub. I'll definitely visit when next in New Barnet.

Tucked away down a side road between thr Railway Bell (the 'Spoons) and the new Park Quarter development you wouldn't know this place was here unless you looked for it. But in my mind this is one of the nicest pubs in the New Barnet area; given the location is quiet and calm but it's spacious inside and out with a really nice secluded bar garden. It's a Greene King so expect decent food and beers. Friendly staff, football on TV and dog friendly too.
