About This Pub
Ah, the Block & Tackle in Ashington – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper neighbourhood gem, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute stars; they're warm and chatty, making you feel right at home the moment you walk in, whether you're there for a quick lunch or to catch the game. The drinks selection is spot on too, with a good mix of beers, ciders, and wines that won't break the bank, and the food really hits the mark – think hearty pub classics with some lovely vegan options that folks have raved about. That beer garden is a winner on a sunny day, perfect for gathering with friends or family for a bite and a laugh. But, let's be honest, it's not without its quirks; it's a bit out of the way, so if you're not local, you might have to make a bit of an effort to get there, and the evenings wrap up earlier than some might like, which could put a dampener on plans for a big night out. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone after a relaxed, affordable spot to unwind – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as the positives far outweigh the minor downsides.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and helpful advice on the menu or drinks.
-
It's got great value for money with affordable prices on a solid range of drinks, from draught lagers to craft beers and wines.
-
The food is a real highlight – tasty pub grub with options for everyone, including excellent vegan choices, and it's served quickly.
-
There's a lovely beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun with mates, enjoying a meal or just a refreshing drink outdoors.
-
It's family-friendly with live sports, events, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to pop in for a casual get-together.
-
Plenty of parking and full wheelchair access, so it's hassle-free to visit, no matter how you're getting there.
Cons
-
It's a bit tucked away off the main paths, which makes it more of a locals' spot rather than somewhere you'd stumble upon while travelling.
-
The hours can feel a tad early for late-night fun, typically wrapping up around 11pm or midnight, so it might not suit night owls.
-
While it's got a great vibe for regulars, it doesn't seem to draw much passing trade, so the atmosphere might be quieter on off-peak days.

An ideal local for surrounding residents or those dropping by while travelling although a little off the beaten track for the latter. Decent range of drinks and the food is always good and quickly delivered. I myself today enjoyed a couple of Stellas and the peri peri chicken nachos, delicious to say the least, and my mate Michael concurred, tremendously enjoying his John Smiths too while sharing the nachos, which wasn't a problem due to the size of the portion 😋
Attentive, welcoming bar staff, and a good mix of seemingly regulars who were all friendly and, like us, enjoying a Friday afternoon drop of relaxation. Plenty of outside seating both out front next to the car park and also the beer garden at the rear. Bravo. Plenty for all including families, although today was beautifully sprog-free. I love children but I couldn't eat a whole one.
I had a wonderful experience here while travelling through in my campervan. I booked the spot over the phone, and they were incredibly kind and polite from the start. Once I arrived, I asked what time I should leave in the morning, and they simply said, "You're welcome to stay for up to three nights if you need." I only stayed one night, but that level of hospitality made a big impression. The parking lot was also very quiet and peaceful overnight, which made for a great night's rest. A truly welcoming and thoughtful experience — thank you!
Went for a night out around Christmas. Great atmosphere, affordable and friendly staff.
Live music was on offer and the tables of customers were super supportive and sang along.
Didn't eat food that evening but people were ordering take out to the venue which is a great idea for late night accessibility.
A proper locals local, passing trade will be minimal. There is plenty of space inside and the bar staff are good. Large car park and wheelchair accessible throughout.
Great choice of vegan options. Food was lovely, the staff are very helpful and nice. Good value for money.
