About This Pub
Ah, the Black Lion – it's one of those classic London pubs that just feels like a proper gem, tucked away by the River Thames in Hammersmith. I've got to say, chatting about it with you lot, it's got so much going for it; the food is a real highlight, with Sunday roasts that are cooked to perfection and presented like something out of a dream, plus a solid menu of pub favourites that hit the spot every time. The team behind the bar are an absolute delight – always welcoming, quick to lend a hand, and even thoughtful enough to look after your furry friend without a second thought. It's got that perfect blend of traditional English pub charm and a buzzing atmosphere that's ideal for a relaxed afternoon with friends or even marking a special occasion like a birthday. And let's not forget the drinks; they've got a fabulous lineup of ales, wines, and gins that pair brilliantly with the views of the river. Of course, it's not all perfect – there was that one review where the chicken burger came out burned and dry, which sounds like a right shame and could happen to anyone on a off day in the kitchen. Still, with an overall rating pushing 4.4, it's clear the good far outweighs the bad, and I'd definitely recommend popping in if you're in the area, especially for events like the Boat Race. All in all, it's a welcoming spot that makes you feel right at home, but maybe keep an eye on what you order to avoid any surprises!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think beautifully cooked roasts, tasty pies, and fresh fish and chips that leave you wanting more.
-
The staff are so friendly and attentive; they'll even sort out treats and water for your dog without you having to ask, making it feel like a real home away from home.
-
It's got that cosy, lively atmosphere that's perfect for a catch-up with mates, celebrating a birthday, or just enjoying a pint by the Thames.
-
A cracking selection of beers, wines, and gins, including some standout ones like the malbec and mango gin that folks rave about.
-
The location is brilliant – right on the north bank of the River Thames, with a rich history and even a top spot for watching the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.
Cons
-
There have been a few slip-ups in the kitchen, like overcooked burgers with burned buns, which can really put a dampener on things.
-
It gets pretty busy at times, though from what I've heard, it doesn't usually mess with the service, but it's worth noting if you're after a quiet spot.

Great venue overall
Had a chicken Sunday roast and it was cooked and presented beautifully
Staff were very helpful, and provided treats and water for my dog before I got a chance to ask.
Was a little busy but didn't affect my service or the atmosphere
Will definitely visit again anytime I'm in the area.
The finest pub in the area!
I chose to celebrate my birthday here with my friends, and it was absolutely brilliant. The food was top-notch— beautifully presented. Jola and her team were outstanding—so friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming.
The atmosphere was lively yet cosy, making it the perfect place for a celebration. Everything was spot on, from the service to the setting. We had such a great time.
Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a spot to celebrate
Ordered chicken burger. Food was hard to describe. Bun burned. Completely black. Chicken and bacon dry and way overcooked.
I don't know how something like that can come out of the kitchen.
Took the family in for a pub lunch - and WHAT a lunch. Great range of beers at the bar, and the menu while not huge was very tempting. And it was all excellent - the pies were great, the fish and chips excellent and the chicken succulent. The salt and pepper squid starters were tasty and the pork belly bites just sinful! A lovely pub enhanced by great food!
We called in to the Black Lion in the vain hope of finding a table for a late Sunday lunch. And were rewarded with friendly staff and a table straight away. The malbec was great and the mango gin incredible 😋 As were the two roast pork dinners, which arrived in good time. The atmosphere was comfortable, the pub welcoming. And one particular member of staff Amar was personable, helpful and efficient. A really excellent Sunday lunch experience, thank you😀
