About This Pub

Ah, the Black Lion – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Scarborough, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute stars; they're quick with your drinks, remember your usual, and make everyone feel like part of the gang, which is just lovely for a casual catch-up with friends. The beer garden is a real highlight – imagine sinking a pint under the heaters when the sun dips, or enjoying the fresh air in their covered spot. It's budget-friendly too, so you can make a night of it without worrying about the tab. Plus, being dog-friendly adds that extra touch of warmth, perfect if you're out for a stroll with your pooch. On the flip side, there was that awkward moment someone mentioned about staff not being too welcoming to kids using the toilets, which might make you think twice if you're with the family. And if you're booking a room, watch out for noisy neighbours – it could disrupt your rest after a long day. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good time, with more highs than lows, but it's always worth keeping those little niggles in mind to set your expectations right.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in – it's like chatting with old mates behind the bar.
  • They've got a fantastic beer garden with a covered area and heaters, perfect for enjoying a pint outdoors even when the British weather plays up.
  • It's super affordable, so you can pop in for a quick drink or a full night out without breaking the bank.
  • Dog-friendly vibes mean you can bring your furry friend along, which is always a winner for a relaxed pub visit.
  • The service is quick and efficient, so you won't be waiting ages for your round, and they've got some great events and offers to keep things lively.
Cons
  • There was that one off-putting incident where staff weren't too keen on letting a child use the facilities, which could put off families or make things awkward.
  • If you're staying over, noise from other guests in the rooms can be a real nuisance, especially if you're after a good night's sleep.
  • It seems like the pub might not always handle every situation smoothly, based on a couple of grumbles about behaviour.

Disgraceful behaviour I was appalled when I asked if my 8 year old son could use the toilet we was told yes. when we walked through we heard the woman say I am sick of this I am putting up a notice over the toilets at that my son said dad I don’t think she what’s me to go to the toilet so I tried to raise my concerns to be told the toilet is for paying customers I then asked who was in charge she replied me and started laughing my son is 8 year old with autism and struggles at the best of times SO BEWARE OF THIS PLACE

Great little pub, the staff are so helpful and friendly. They work hard too! We call in if we have been into town before we get the bus home. We always say we're just having 'the one" but always end up having a few! Eve is particularly nice, always has a smile, remembers what we drink and is great to chat to. Keep up the good work

Beautiful clean rooms but noise of loud people im room next to mine made it impossible to sleep and I had my driving test the next morning 😭😭 Not the owners fault at all just super rude people staying next to me who wouldn't shut up until gone 3am even after I knocked on the wall. But would recommend staying here as most likely not going to be rude people here every night and it's a very well run pub/accommodation. (Personal wash basin and tea/coffee/kettle in the room was much appreciated)
