About This Pub
Ah, the Belgian Monk – it's one of those places that just warms your cockles on a chilly Norwich evening. I've got to say, diving into their extensive beer menu feels like a proper adventure; whether you're after a crisp draught or something more unique from the bottles, there's bound to be a gem that'll have you coming back for more. The food's another highlight – those mussel pots are legendary, and the rest of the menu pulls in some cracking Belgian and Northern French influences that make every bite feel special. The team behind the bar are dead helpful too, always ready with a recommendation or a chat, which makes the whole experience feel genuinely welcoming. On the flip side, it's popular, so you might find yourself disappointed if the mussels have run out or if there's a glitch with booking online – it's a minor niggle, but it happens. All in all, if you're up for exploring some top-notch brews and tucking into solid grub without breaking the bank, it's well worth a visit; just plan ahead and you'll have a cracking time with your mates.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – with over 45 varieties including Belgian classics, it's a treat for anyone who loves a good pint.
-
The food is spot on, especially those famous mussel pots and other Belgian-inspired dishes that bring a real taste of the continent right here in Norwich.
-
The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable; they'll guide you through the menu and make you feel right at home, which really adds to the welcoming vibe.
-
It's got a great atmosphere in a historic spot, perfect for catching up with mates over a meal and a drink.
Cons
-
Some popular dishes like the mussels can sell out quickly, so it's worth getting there early if that's what you're after.
-
There might be the odd hiccup with service or bookings, like issues if you haven't accepted cookies, which could put a small dampener on things.
-
While the menu is diverse, it might feel a bit overwhelming for first-timers, and not everything is always available.

Such a wonderful find in Norwich and finally somewhere with brilliant mussels! The service and hosts were exceptional and food was tasty. Definitely coming here again!
**The mussels can go quick - been here twice where they have sold out**
Visited for my partners birthday having had many recommendations. Very friendly, knowledgable and attentive staff. Overall great atmosphere too. The food was lovely as were the beers. Great selection of food available on the menu and of course endless beers on the separate beer menu too of which staff happy to advise. Also, dog friendly which was a bonus for us in Norwhich with our dog. A true gem of a place!
Extensive menu of Belgian trappist beers is a treat. Great food and service too.
Highly recommended place, that did not disappoint.
A highly recommended location, with a diverse menu, with small plate/starter options (3 small plates for £22 / price as at April 2025) and strong main menu from which you could choose at least half-a-dozen decent options and still be spoilt for choose. Mussels highly recommended.
Good beer and wine selection.
Service a little slow/inattentive, although we arrived at the busiest time, so can appreciate this will sometimes happened.
Delicious food, although not all dishes were served hot, a few being simply warm.
Would highly recommend and would visit again.
Suggest calling to book a table; don’t simply turn up.
Friendly knowledgeable service. Great advice on beers and wines. Tartiflette is a must but will fill you up. First ate mussels here 10 years ago. Clive is one of my top 3-4 front of house/management to ever work in Norwich. Courteous and committed to service and even when human errors happen always correcting them to keep clientele happy, I've witnessed that in several places he's worked over 15 years. The human touch.
