About This Pub

Ah, Battle Axes – it's one of those pubs that really captures that classic British feel, tucked away near Borehamwood with its historic roots and a cosy spot perfect for unwinding after a day out. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the food steals the show; imagine tucking into a hearty mixed grill or a special burger that's packed with flavour and served up in big portions that hit the spot every time. The staff are generally lovely and welcoming, which makes for a pleasant atmosphere whether you're sitting inside by the fire or out in the garden on a sunny day. It's also super handy for families or dog owners, with free parking and that easy-going vibe. On the flip side, though, service can be a mixed bag – some days it's quick and cheerful, but others, you might find yourself waiting longer than expected, especially if they're short on staff or run out of popular items. Still, with an overall solid rating, it's worth a visit if you're in the area; just keep in mind to maybe book ahead or go on a quieter day to make the most of it. All in all, it's a solid choice for good grub and a chat, but like any spot, it's got its quirks.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious pub classics like mixed grills and crispy battered cod, with generous portions that leave you feeling satisfied.
  • It's got a really welcoming atmosphere, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options for a relaxed vibe.
  • Free parking is a bonus, and being dog-friendly means it's perfect for popping in after a walk in the nearby countryside.
  • The pub's historic charm as a 19th-century inn adds a nice touch, making it a great spot for catching up with mates or enjoying a meal in a cosy setting.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit patchy at times, with some reports of long waits even when it's not too busy, which might put a dampener on your visit.
  • They've got a good selection of drinks overall, but the draft beer options are a tad limited, so if you're after variety, you might be disappointed.
  • Occasionally, specials or certain items aren't available, which can be frustrating if you've got your heart set on something specific.

We had booked for a lunch, on arrival we were shown to a table. Having already looked online at the menu, we ordered a mixed grill and battered cod, chips & peas. Food arrived in good time, both meals were delicious, the batter on the cod was very tasty and crisp. We both enjoyed our lunch, we shall return again, thank you.

Delightful place to eat, food is delicious. I had the special burger which was amazing and so tasty, with garlic bread and a Coke Zero. Parking is plentiful and free, indoor and outdoor seating. Service was very quick and staff were lovely and friendly. Will definitely be back.

The positives are it is dog-friendly, has a garden area and the server who served us was nice. The negatives are the other servers aren't as good, there was one till working and instead of one person serving and another taking orders they left it up to that one person to do it so had to wait a long time just to order, all while the other two casually served food, which was done but then we weren't given cutlery or salt/pepper so I just went and collected myself. The food is average in my view, under seasoned. My friend however liked his steak pie. In total for 1 beer, 1 soft drink, a pie and a burger came to over £40.

A Test of Patience! Went for a work lunch and almost qualified for a pension while waiting for our food. The pub was almost empty, yet the waitress seemed about as interested in us as a cat is in following commands. Tried to order the duck burger (a special, no less), but they didn’t have enough for the whole table—so by the time it got to me, it was extinct. After what felt like an eternity, the food finally arrived. The Duo of Chicken was decent, but the squid starter looked like it had seen a ghost and could’ve used more time in the fryer. Overall, slow service, lack of enthusiasm, and a menu that runs out mid-order? No thanks. Won’t be back—life’s too short, even if lunch there isn’t.

Great pub/restaurant. The food was really good just what you expect from pub food with big portions. They have a wide variety of drinks but when it came to draft beer they only had 3-4. The service was good and the staff were friendly.
