About This Pub

Ah, The Three Compasses – it's one of those hidden gems in the rural parts of Hertfordshire that just feels like a proper escape from the hustle and bustle. I've got to say, the food really steals the show; whether it's a traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings or some fresh pasta dishes with an Italian flair, everything's cooked to a high standard and presented beautifully, which is a nice touch for us foodies. The atmosphere is spot on too, with intimate areas like the snug for a quiet chat or the gardens for al fresco dining when the weather's playing ball – it's just the sort of place you'd want to linger over a pint or a cocktail. On the flip side, though, service isn't always consistent; there was that one tale of a miserable server that soured the evening for a group, so it might depend on who you're dealt with on the night. Plus, with the pub occasionally showing as closed and varying hours, it's wise to plan ahead to avoid any disappointments. All in all, it's a solid choice for a get-together with mates or a family outing, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – the good far outweighs the bad, but it's good to be prepared!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think fresh, hearty British pub classics with a lovely Italian twist, like delicious roasts and tasty veggie options that really hit the spot.
  • It's got such a welcoming atmosphere with cosy nooks, a roaring fire on chilly evenings, and beautiful gardens perfect for soaking up the sun during summer months.
  • The staff are generally friendly and accommodating, making you feel right at home, especially for special occasions or a relaxed Sunday lunch.
  • With a solid 4.4 rating, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a great experience, from cask ales and cocktails to private event spaces.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss; one experience mentioned a rather grumpy server, which might put a dampener on your evening.
  • The pub seems to have some inconsistencies with opening times, and it's currently listed as closed, so it's worth double-checking before heading out.
  • While most meals are spot on, portions might not always suit everyone, like that smaller side dish that left one person wanting a bit more.

I really enjoyed everything about this place. They have different style rooms depending on where you prefer to eat. I ordered the goats cheese and beetroot as the starter which was fantastic. I got the side of the tomato beef ragu pasta which was amazing but exactly the right size for my small appetite that day - they also brought a whole bowl of Parmesan for me to help myself. For dessert I ordered the brownie and doughballs with Nutella which came with icecream. I personally was not a fan of the brownie or the ice cream I wish there had been the option to just have a bowl of the doughballs as I had seen in other reviews as these were amazing. The tables were quite close together and it was really quite loud. I hope they invest in some sound absorbing panels. I would recommend and will be coming back.

Excellent cappuccino. I can recommend the breakfast brioche bun although I prefer the brioche bun to be warmed through.

We went for a meal last week on Wednesday evening and we were served by the most grumpiest and miserable server I have not encountered in years. There were 2 of them working that night and this particular one was quite short. We were assured by the taller one that she would not be serving us after making a complaint but long behold we endured the torture of being served by this grumpy server throughout our meal. She ruined our night. My family and I are regulars for years and we have enjoyed top notch service from the likes of Paul and the rest of the team. This server needs training or career change. For now we will go around the corner to The Horseshoes where service is not a hit and miss but always a bliss. One positive thing is the food is always good.

I stumbled upon the pub in the way home and what a find! They had really welcoming and accommodating staff. We had the broccoli soup with sourdough, a beef roast with a side of pigs in blankets and a steak and ale pie. Every plate was delicious and it was a great example of British food done right. The portions were also very generous. I would come back here again and I would highly recommend this place.

The food was absolutely delicious. We had a Sunday roast and a 3 course meal. I had the nut roast, it was so tasty, it's nice to see pubs make an effort for veggies too. The presentation of food is great too. Lovely service, atmosphere and location too. Look forward to coming back soon.
