About This Pub

Ah, the Baron of Beef – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local favourite, tucked away in Cambridge with its rich history dating back to 1752. I have to say, what really stands out is how the team there go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome; they're chatty, efficient, and handle groups like pros, even if you haven't booked ahead. The food's a winner too – think generous portions of hearty dishes like steak and ale pie that hit the spot, and it's all served up quickly and piping hot. Plus, if you're a sports fan, it's brilliant for catching the big matches on Sky or TNT, with a cosy beer garden to enjoy it in. On the flip side, though, some prices on drinks, especially the non-alcoholic ones, might make you raise an eyebrow – they're not always as budget-friendly as you'd hope. And it can get a tad crowded, particularly on weekends, so planning ahead is a good idea if you want to snag a table without any fuss. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed day out or evening with friends, blending that old-world charm with modern vibes, but just keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and incredibly helpful, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is spot on – generous portions that leave you satisfied, with everything coming out hot and fresh, perfect for a hearty meal.
  • It's got that classic historic charm with a relaxed vibe, being a Grade II listed pub that's been around since 1752, which adds a real sense of character.
  • They're brilliant for watching live sports, with options like Sky Sports and TNT, so it's a top spot if you're into football, rugby, or other big events.
  • Family-friendly and dog-friendly facilities, plus a beer garden, make it versatile for different groups, whether you're popping in for a quick bite or a longer catch-up.
Cons
  • Some drinks, like the non-alcoholic options, can feel a bit steep on the price, which might catch you off guard if you're watching your wallet.
  • It can get busy, especially on Sundays or for big events, so you might need to book ahead to avoid any hassle with seating.
  • The kitchen closes relatively early in the evening, which could be a downside if you're after a late-night bite.

We visited here, the 9 of us, on a Sunday with no booking and wanted to eat, so quite a challenge!! But the great people working managed to find us all seats and made us able to eat too, the food was really great and came quickly, price was very reasonable. Thank you so much to team working today, all very friendly and eager to help 🥰

A lovely pub with a relaxed vibe and decent prices. Opted for a non-alcoholic berry cider and was a bit shocked at the price, though the drink was crisp and gently floral on the taste buds. The steak and ale pie was fairly priced for a good portion and was a hearty meal. The gravy was tasty and the pie was rich and decadent. Do wish there was a bit more of the mushy peas in comparison to the chips and pie itself. All in all, a pleasant meal and place with the visit

The bartenders were extremely nice and helpful. Even though the kitchen closed at 8p, they had no problem with us ordering dinners 1/4 till 8p, and the food came out hot and fresh. The beer came out fast. Very enjoyable experience.

Generous Portion I am having reviews for all of Cambridge pubs. So the grades and ratings are just temporary, and I will return to adjust after the pub marathon. The rival of this pub is Mitre next door. Similar to the Bath House and Eagle nearby. The food was delivered hot, in generous portions. I thought the burger tasted better than Bryon nearby, despite the fact that Baron of Beef is not burger specialist. It's cheaper and has bigger portions than Bryon too. The vegetables and potatoes of the Sunday roast tasted good, not overdone. Lovely crispy Yorkshire pudding. Nothing we ordered was bland. Looking around other tables, the food that other customers was generous in portions too. The environment was clean. The tables are not too close to each other. Maybe the prices are lower than Mitre next door, but Baron of Beef's food quality and quantity was very impressive.
