About This Pub

Oh, the Pickerel Inn in Cambridge is such a gem, isn't it? It's got that timeless appeal with its old wooden beams and low ceilings that make you feel right at home, and the beer garden out back is just the ticket for a sunny afternoon. The food's a real highlight too – think hearty classics like steak and ale pie that's big enough to satisfy anyone, all served up affordably and with options for different tastes. The team behind the bar are always cheerful and ready to help, which really lifts the whole experience. That said, they do tend to chuck in a bit too much ice with the drinks, which can dilute things a tad, and it gets nicely toasty inside, which is charming but might not suit if you're feeling the heat. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening; you'd be hard-pressed not to enjoy yourself here, especially if you're up for a bit of history with your pint.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm and cosy atmosphere with low ceilings and wooden beams really make you feel like you're stepping back in time – it's just lovely for a relaxing pint.
  • They serve up some cracking food, like that glorious steak and ale pie, and it's all affordable with quick service, plus plenty of options for veggies and vegans.
  • The staff are absolute gems, always friendly and helpful, whether it's sorting out a drink or even lending a hand with Wi-Fi if you're in a pinch.
  • There's a brilliant beer garden for enjoying the outdoors, and they've got a great range of ales and craft beers to choose from.
  • It's super welcoming for everyone, including families and dogs, and students can snag a 20% discount, which is a nice touch for a night out.
Cons
  • They can be a bit heavy-handed with the ice in drinks, which might water them down and leave you wanting a bit more of the good stuff.
  • The pub can get quite warm inside, which adds to the cosy feel but might not be ideal if you're after a cooler spot on a hot day.

A proper British pub with low ceilings and wooden beams, great atmosphere inside and out in the beer garden. Good range of pints and two places to get served from. Definitely recommend over more sterile modern pubs.

Didn't know it was the oldest Ale house. Some cool info. Patio in back and nice pub feel inside.

Such a vibe! The staff here are lovely and the food is affordable and delicious. We had the vegan burger and stake and ale pie. Both were delicious and got served pretty quickly. The place itself is clean and really cozy. One little nitpick would be that they put too much ice in the drinks but that’s just me being picky. Definitely will be coming back and recommending to friends.

I ordered the steak and ale pie. It was GLORIOUS. IT WAS SO BIG. A PROPER steak and ale pie fit for a King. It was served with beautiful mash potato and a big cabbage leek. The gravy was divine. The temperature in the pub was very warm and pleasant. Very cosy. The pub itself is amazing and felt so cool being a part of such rich history. I'll gladly return and order more food next time I'm back in Cambridge.

I came here on a day trip and bought a nice cocktail before returning to London. The bartender was so kind to allow me to use his wi-fi to get my train times before I left.
