About This Pub

Ah, Bar 190 – it's one of those places in South Kensington that really knows how to charm you with its cozy atmosphere and a menu full of tempting cocktails that often hit the spot just right. I've heard from mates that the bartenders can be absolute gems, striking up engaging chats and going the extra mile with thoughtful touches like providing olives or snapping a quick photo, which makes for a memorable night out, especially if you're gearing up for a show at the Albert Hall nearby. On the flip side, it's a bit of a mixed bag sometimes; a few folks have shared stories of downright rude service that left them fuming, and the prices can sting a bit if the drinks don't quite measure up, like that espresso martini that fell flat for some. Overall, it's got that classic pub allure with a touch of elegance, but I'd say it's best to keep your expectations in check and maybe pop in on a good day for the full experience – after all, it's all about those little wins that make a visit worthwhile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The cocktails are generally fantastic, with a fine selection that impresses and leaves you wanting more, especially for whiskey chats or classic mixes like the espresso martini when it's done right.
  • The staff can be incredibly welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home with great conversations and attentive service that includes little extras like snacks or even taking photos.
  • It has a warm, cozy atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed evening, whether you're popping in before a concert at the Albert Hall or just unwinding in South Kensington.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss, with some experiences feeling quite appalling due to rude or inattentive staff, which really puts a damper on the night.
  • Drinks might come across as overpriced for what you get, especially if they're not up to scratch, like a disappointing espresso martini that didn't live up to expectations despite a discount.
  • There's an inconsistency in quality, where one visit might be brilliant and another leaves you underwhelmed, so it's worth going in with tempered expectations.

We have been to Bar 190 a few times before prior to concerts at the Albert Hall, but never have we been spoken to or treated in the appalling manner that we were last night (June 12th). We entered the bar and enquired with the barman about a table, who paused, looked around, and said “sorry we don’t have any free tables”- we didn’t argue, but thought it was odd as there were a number of unreserved tables free and bookings available online when we’d checked a few minutes earlier. So, we went out onto the front steps, instantly booked a table for 2, then returned to the bar to be met with two barmen (one quite aggressively) telling us that “we are full! There is no space for you”. I tried to tell them we had a booking, and only when a third bartender (who was more apologetic) listened to us, was the time taken to find our booking, and showed us to one of the several tables that were free in the first place. My partner and I visit hotels and bars in London frequently due to business, and never have we been so appalled by the service. The very least we expect is an apology and an explanation as to why we were treated like this. In the meantime, I cannot recommend or return to The Gore or Bar 190

The Hungarian and Spanish bartenders really welcomed me with the best conversations and spirits. Place to visit for whiskey chat

I was thoroughly impressed by the fine selection of cocktails on the menu and the great taste of the ones I tried. The staff was polite, and the bar exudes warm, cozy vibes.

My friends and I stayed for one night at The Gore and had the most amazing time. It was made extra special by the service and drinks at Bar 190. Massive thanks to David and Salvador who kept the cocktails coming, took our photos and provided olives as a snack. Highly recommend the Espresso Martini! As guests we were allowed to stay later than the usual opening hours and were served by a lovely man (so sorry, I’ve not got his name) who took over the all important drinks duties for our group. Thank you again and please don’t watch what will no doubt be the embarrassing CCTV of 3 middle aged women singing and dancing.

Just popped in here for cocktails. Not a great experience, £16/cocktail and collectively our group felt it was the worst espresso martini we've had. It turned out the usual mixologist wasn't there and we got a big discount on our drinks when we mentioned it. Ambience is nice, service was good in a nice part of London. Hopefully just a one off bad experience.
