About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about the Axe & Cleaver – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper British gem, tucked away in the picturesque village of Dunham Massey near Altrincham. I love how it combines that classic Victorian charm with a welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for catching up with mates over a pint or enjoying a hearty meal. The food really stands out; they've got these delicious pub classics and seasonal dishes that make you want to linger a bit longer, especially with their new spring-summer menu that's all about fresh, vibrant flavours for those lazy afternoons in the beer garden. The staff are brilliant too, always on hand with friendly service that makes you feel right at home. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect – some folks have mentioned the prices creeping up a tad, like with certain mains that might not quite justify the cost, and if you turn up unannounced, you could be nudged to free up the table after a couple of hours, which isn't ideal for a relaxed evening. Still, with its great location near scenic spots, it's a solid choice for a get-together, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe book ahead to make the most of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed meal or a quick drink after a walk in the nearby National Trust gardens.
  • The food is top-notch, with quality pub classics and seasonal specials that really hit the spot – I've heard great things about their new spring-summer menu, full of fresh flavours.
  • Service is spot on; the staff are friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and timely help, which makes the whole experience feel personal and enjoyable.
  • It's in a lovely area, ideal for a stop-off on a bike ride or a sunny afternoon in the beer garden, where you might even spot some interesting insects buzzing about.
Cons
  • Prices can feel a bit steep for some dishes, like that lamb shank which left one person feeling it was over the top for what was on the plate.
  • If you pop in without booking, you might be asked to vacate after a couple of hours, which could put a damper on a spontaneous visit.
  • There might be a wait for your meal if it's busy, even though the food is worth it, so it's best to plan ahead if you're in a rush.

Food pub in a nice area. Not a drinkers pub. Nice stop off for a half on a bike ride . Interesting insects to see in the beer garden 🚴 🍻 🐛

We had two lovely dinners on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening whilst staying locally. The menu was interesting, the atmosphere was welcoming and the ambience was charming. Paul was helpful and provided us with friendly and timely service. We came back on the third night (a Thursday) and were confronted with 2 grumpy women who didn't want us to be there. We felt unwelcome so we left. Motto is - only go when Paul is working.

Booked a table for 5 as a Mother’s Day treat, arrived early but we were soon given a great large round table in the window. The pub is well staffed and the service excellent, had a little wait for our meal but it was busy and the food is proper stuff so that was no problem. Great variety of meals available at reasonable prices, good portions & vegetarian options, we all enjoyed them! There was a big car park and picnic tables outside, we’ll have to come back in summer, cheers!

Friendly staff, reasonably priced comfortable environment. Unplanned visit and called in on the off chance to see if we could get a table. The guy who spoke to us upon entering was very helpful and found us a table but did advise us we needed to vacate after about 2 hours. This wasn't going to be an issue as we already planned on having a Sunday lunch. I had beer rump, my wife had the roast turkey, we had a side of cauliflower cheese. The food was very good, and they did provide an extra mug of gravy when requested. If I was picky, I thought the roast potatoes could be more cooked, but that is my preference. The portions are good and we both felt full afterwards, this resulted in us sharing a desert. We had the bakewell tart and custard, which again was very nice. Looked like a reasonable selection of beer, I stuck with my usual Guinness, my wife had shandy due to driving. Overall, a nice experience and the staff are good. One thing we both noticed, we weren't asked about allergies, which is unusual. This is something that will improve the business if they make it something the integrate into the greating, we have a family member with a severe allergy so this is why we noticed it. This is not a criticism, more an observation as we really enjoyed this place. Thanks

Came here for Valentine’s Day with my partner, food was absolutely lovely, however £25 for the lamb shank in abit of gravy (was suppose to be in a shepards pie) was extortionate. The picture attached is our food untouched, that is definitely not in a shepards pie. My partners mixed grill was lovely he really enjoyed it.
