About This Pub
Ah, Ye Olde Man & Scythe – what a delightful spot it is, tucked away in Bolton and boasting one of the oldest pubs in England. I have to say, it's got that timeless charm that just draws you in, with its flagstone floors, dark wood, and cosy nooks that make you feel right at home. The staff are an absolute treat, always friendly and happy to chat about the place's fascinating history, which really adds to the experience. You'll find a smashing range of drinks on offer, like those local ales and ciders that go down a treat, and if you're lucky, you might catch some live music on the weekends to liven things up. It's all about good value too – those pasties from the cabinet are surprisingly delicious for a quick bite. On the flip side, though, the food selection is pretty basic, so if you're hoping for a proper sit-down meal, you might be a bit disappointed. And it does get bustling at peak times, which is brilliant for the vibe but could feel a touch too lively if you're after a peaceful evening. Overall, it's a cracking pub that does history and hospitality well, and I'd recommend popping in for a pint if you're in the area – just go with the flow and enjoy the moment!

A historic pub dating back to 1251, making it one of the oldest in England. The interior is full of character, with multiple rooms and traditional features. Friendly staff and a good selection of drinks, including local ales. Live music is often featured on weekends, adding to the lively atmosphere. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking a traditional pub experience
What can you say? The oldest still-existing pub in England, full of history and memories... We just stepped in by chance on a business trip to have a pint after a day's work done. A pub as a pub should be, a warm welcome and a good choice of drinks, just came back the next day.
If you like your pubs with character you're gonna love this place...has it to burn. History aplenty, friendly staff, good range of beers (Flat Cap cask is spot on) and good value. No kitchen as such but the pasties from the hot cabinet are delicious - genius. Lively bar area but plenty of nooks and crannies, so if you want quiet you can have it. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
First time visited. I'll be back!!!!!
Lovely atmosphere and the staff are brilliant. Very informative, friendly, and happy.
The building has a rich history, and I think it is either the 1st or 2nd oldest pub in England - I may have this wrong, but it's a beautiful building.
.....and the cider, oh my goodness!! The rhubarb and ginger cider is like fruit juice. I think it was 7%, but so yummy, and very more-ish -BE CAREFUL.
Can't wait to go back.
I've put 5* for food, it was the most tasty pastie.
Oldest pub in Bolton apparently. I can believe it. Flagstone floor in the corridor. Olde, dark wood, multi room pub. Several cask ales on. Tried Flat Cap, brewed in Bolton. Very nice. Several lagers and ciders and usual bottled beers. Love old historic pubs like this. Didn't try any food.
