About This Pub
Ah, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away in St Albans with its fascinating history stretching back over a millennium. It's got that warm, inviting feel where you can really settle in for a good chat over a perfectly poured pint of local ale. The food stands out too; I've heard brilliant things about their roasts and specials, all whipped up with a modern twist on classic pub grub that leaves you wanting more. The team behind the bar are an absolute delight, always ready with a smile and a story about the place's past, which adds to the fun. On the flip side, it can get a bit heaving on weekends, so you might have to queue for a table, and do keep an eye on those kitchen times because they wrap up earlier than you'd think, especially on quieter days. All in all, it's a cracking choice for anyone after a bit of history, hearty meals, and a lively atmosphere without the fuss – I'd say it's well worth a visit for a proper pub experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building is an absolute gem, with its origins dating back to 793AD, creating a cosy and charming atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxing pint.
-
The food is top-notch – traditional pub fare with a modern twist, like amazing roasts and burgers that really hit the spot, all prepared by a talented head chef.
-

-
They've got a great selection of local beers and wines, always served perfectly, thanks to their dedicated cellar team.
-
Live music events, including open mic nights and festivals, add a lively buzz and keep things entertaining for everyone.
Cons
-
Kitchen hours can be a bit restrictive, closing early on some days like Sundays, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning to eat.
-
It gets pretty busy, especially in the garden on sunny days, which might mean waits for a table or a spot outside.
-
The old building has low ceilings and traditional features that could feel a tad cramped for taller folks or larger groups.

We recently held our engagement party here and couldn’t be happier with the experience. From start to finish, the service was outstanding. The staff were incredibly helpful, friendly, and went above and beyond to make everything run smoothly. Our waitress always served with a smile and was extremely efficient throughout the evening. The bar staff were just as amazing, even helping to clear our tables before our reservation began. I honestly can’t recommend this place enough – the staff alone make it truly special. Thank you for making our celebration unforgettable!
Met some friends from work for lunch in the sun, 2 of us had roast beef which was amazing, really tasty and beautifully cooked, 2 had pizza which they enjoyed also, they do explain that pizza won't be delivered at the same time as they are cooked in a different kitchen, so bare this in mind if its important to you, they came round frequently to check if more drinks or food was needed which was a lovely touch and very helpful. Great visit!
Awesome pub that we chose at ransoms but were very happy in the end. On a hot day there is more space inside, so don’t be deterred if the garden is crowded.
Cosy vibes, friendly staff and awesome burgers. What else could you need?
Fantastic time at this wonderful old pub. The beer was delicious, the roast and sticky toffee pudding were out of this world and the staff were amazing. Loved hearing about the history of the pub. Highly recommend.
Came here on a very random visit to St. Albans....
What a find!
The building and interior are VERY traditional in all aspects, with low beamed ceilings, rustic carpets and furniture but it's very fitting and cosy even though the pub is huge and has a few rooms/seating areas.
It's located a stones throw away from the cathedral (impressive looking btw) and right on the river and with lake views.. perfect!
The food was super tasty and cooked to perfection, steak and chips and fish and chips all freshly cooked with good sized portions for a reasonable price.
What really makes this place is the Staff, they all seem mainly young (I'm old) but are really professional, attentive and go above and beyond to make your time spent here to be a wonderful experience even when the place is heaving and super busy....
A massive special thanks to the lovely lady staff member (forgot to ask her name) who found an umbrella for me and my daughter as it started to rain when we were leaving! Really made our day!
We will definitely return in the future for a planned visit!
