About This Pub

Ah, the Lower Red Lion – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper hidden gem in St Albans, with its historic charm and that inviting open fire making you want to settle in for the evening. I love how they've nailed the beer selection; it's always fresh and varied, and at £5 a pint, it's a fair shout without breaking the bank. The staff are dead friendly too – think of it as popping round to a mate's for a chat, especially with the landlord on hand to make you feel right at home. Being dog-friendly adds such a nice touch; you can bring your four-legged friend along, and it's brilliant for those spontaneous conversations with other regulars and their pups. On the flip side, it's firmly an adults-only spot, which is great if you're after some peace, but it might not suit everyone, particularly if you've got the family in tow. Oh, and do keep in mind the kitchen's shut on Mondays, so if you're fancying a bite, you'll want to swing by on other days when the home-cooked grub, like their fish and chips, really hits the mark. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint and a natter, though it does have its quirks that might not appeal to all tastes.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on – plenty of real ales in excellent condition, and at a reasonable £5 a pint, it's a treat for any ale enthusiast.
  • It's wonderfully dog-friendly, with a cosy atmosphere where you can enjoy a chat with friendly locals and their furry companions.
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming; chatting with the landlord feels like catching up with an old mate, making every visit feel personal and warm.
  • No kids around means it's a peaceful spot for adults to relax, especially with that lovely open fire and home-cooked food that's spot on when available.
  • They've got live music and beer festivals throughout the year, plus handy parking at the back, which is a bonus in busy St Albans.
Cons
  • It's strictly child-free, so if you're planning a family outing, this might not be the best choice and could feel a bit exclusive.
  • The kitchen is closed on Mondays, which limits your food options on that day, so you'd need to plan around that for a proper meal.
  • Opening hours can vary a touch, and it might be quiet during off-peak times, like mid-afternoon mid-week, so it doesn't always have that lively buzz.

We dropped into this pub mid-afternoon, mid-week. It was quiet, as is often expected at this hour. We got talking to David, the Landlord, who was a very affable guy. There were several ales available of which I tried a couple that were in excellent condition. Reasonably priced at £5 a pint. Cannot comment on food as we didn't eat here.

Really nice pub, open fire and super dog friendly. All the patrons are very happy and friendly as well and I enjoyed having a nice chat with a few (and theor dogs). Personally, I prefer a pub without kids so this ine is right up my street!

With attentive, friendly bar staff, an always-changing line of real ales, this is a must-visit pub in the beautiful town of St Albans. Fanatical about our four-legged friends, the Lower Red also puts on live music at their excellent beer festivals throughout the year. All food is home cooked.

Very cosy and welcoming pub in St.Albans with a fire, cute dogs and no children! The pub is on a cute street and has some parking at the back. The food was on point, the fish and chips were great.
