About This Pub
You know, when I popped into The Portland Arms, it really felt like one of those hidden gems in St Albans that you'd tell your mates about over a pint. Built back in the 1800s, it's got this tangible history that adds so much character, and the cosy interior with a real fire makes it perfect for relaxing with friends. The food is spot on, especially those Sunday roasts – I mean, the reviews are glowing about the flavours and portions, and it's all made with local ingredients, which is brilliant for supporting nearby producers. Plus, the drinks selection is spot on for ale lovers, and the weekly quiz adds a fun buzz without it feeling overwhelming. On the flip side, it's not slap bang in the city centre, so you might have to wander a bit to get there, and the hours can be a bit patchy, which might put a dampener on spontaneous visits. All in all, it's a lovely spot for a laid-back evening or a hearty meal, and I'd say it's well worth seeking out if you're after that authentic pub experience with a welcoming crowd.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is incredibly cosy and welcoming, like stepping into a warm hug on a chilly evening.
-
Their Sunday roasts are an absolute highlight – folks can't stop raving about the delicious pork and gravy, making it a must-try for a proper Sunday treat.
-
The staff are brilliant and attentive, always on hand to make sure everything's just right, from checking if you need more gravy to sorting out bookings smoothly.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of real ales, along with wines and spirits, so there's something for every taste.
-
It's super dog-friendly, family welcome, and has lovely outdoor seating and a garden, perfect for enjoying a sunny afternoon or a quiz night on Wednesdays.
Cons
-
It's tucked away in the back streets, so it might mean a bit of an extra walk from the main centre, which isn't ideal if you're in a rush.
-
The opening hours can seem a tad confusing with varying times listed, and it might not always stay open as late as you'd hope for a lively night out.

The pork Sunday roast was the best I've ever had. Gravy absolutely delicious too. A little out of the way but worth the extra walk. Cozy atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff.
Loved this little pub down a residential street just off the city centre. It's so cosy and feels like you could be sitting in your front room. The fire was lit and it was nicely decorated for Christmas. There are board games to play and the staff and other locals were really friendly
Wish Portland Arms was my local!
Caz and her team are fantastic - brilliant friendly service byball team memebers and Caz is the landlady that'llensure everythingis right for you. Checking if more gravy is needed and letting us pre-order for a busy Easter Sunday so we had our choice roast and it arrived quickly after we sat down.
The pub itself is wonderful and cozy inside with 3 seating/dining areas - lovely wall paper and pictures with a fun spin of historic times.
The outside garden is covered and has many cute heated pods - suitable for all weather
The food is generous and delicious.
Was lovely to spend our afternoon at Portland Arms.
This local pup friendly pub exceeded all expectations. The roast dinner was delicious and the cauliflour cheese is a must! The attentive service provided by the ladies behind the bar added to the overall delightful experience. Booking was straightforward and fast, our cozy table by the fire a perfect setting for our sunday lunch. We can't wait to come back! Thanks 😊
Really great find while walking around the streets of St Albans as just outside the centre between the river and the cathedral. They had a large rear garden full of amazing little huts to shelter from the sun or rain! It looks so good and I can imagine it getting busy on a Sunny afternoon so recommend getting there early to get a good spot! Very friendly staff and good selection of drinks on offer, typical of a Fullers pub. If we visit St Albans again we will definitely be going there for a drink!
