About This Pub
Ah, Ye Olde Black Sheep – it's one of those hidden gems in York that really hits the spot if you're in the mood for a relaxed pint or a quality coffee. From what I've gathered from the chats online, the staff are absolute stars; they're professional, chatty, and make you feel like a regular right away, which is just what you want on a Sunday afternoon outing. The beer selection is brilliant too – plenty of proper Yorkshire brews and some cracking foreign options that add a nice twist, making it a go-to for anyone who appreciates a good ale. And let's not forget the coffee; it's genuinely excellent, so if you're meeting mates for a non-alcoholic catch-up, you're sorted. The atmosphere feels warm and homely, especially since it's now under private ownership, giving it that authentic, unpretentious micro-pub charm. But, fair's fair, it's not all perfect – I hear they've dropped the Black Sheep Ales from the lineup, which is a real shame if that's your thing, and with doors shutting by 5 PM most days, it might not suit those evening plans. Still, based on the positive vibes from most who've been, it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and professional, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of real ales and some top-quality foreign beers – perfect for a proper beer enthusiast.
-
The atmosphere is welcoming and cosy, especially now it's privately owned, giving it that authentic micro-pub vibe.
-
It's spotlessly clean, which is always a plus when you're settling in for a pint or a coffee.
-
The coffee is absolutely spot on – a solid 10 out of 10, if you're after a decent brew alongside your drink.
Cons
-
They've stopped serving Black Sheep Ales, which might disappoint anyone popping in specifically for that.
-
The opening hours are a bit limited, typically wrapping up by 5 PM, so it's not ideal for a late-night catch-up.
-
With only a handful of reviews out there, it's hard to get a full picture, but it seems like it could use a bit more buzz online.
-
As a smaller spot, it might feel a tad quiet at times, especially if you're after a lively crowd.

Very clean environment extremely professional staff. Excellent customer service skills. Coffee was 10 out of 10. Will be making this one of my regular places to visit 😊
They no longer supply Black Sheep Ales
Great variety of real ale and some great quality foreign beers. Great atmosphere now privately owned and worth a visit. but due to listed building the name can't be charged easily. It's not black sheep pub, but more a micro pub and better for it.
Nice pub,, serving proper brewed Yorkshire beer,, just had a couple of beers, but enjoyed it immensely,, cheers,,
