About This Pub

Ah, Ye Olde Black Bull – it's one of those classic London pubs that you hear about and think might be just the ticket for a relaxed pint or a catch-up with mates. From the reviews, it's clear they've got some real winners on the beer front, with folks raving about the proper cask ales and reasonable prices that make it feel accessible and authentic. I reckon it's especially buzzing on match days, where the atmosphere really comes alive and the service can be spot on, with the landlord stepping up to ensure everyone's enjoying themselves. But, and it's a big but, there's a fair bit of chatter about the downside – some have had downright unpleasant experiences, like being verbally abused for buying something simple like crisps, which makes you wonder if it's truly a place for all comers. It seems like communication isn't always the staff's strong suit, and there are hints of attitudes that might not sit right with everyone, potentially putting a dampener on what could be a great night out. Overall, if you're up for taking a chance on the good vibes and fancy a solid pint, it's worth a go, but keep your expectations in check and maybe pop in with a group to gauge the mood first – it's all about that balance, isn't it?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is spot on, with proper cask ales like Timothy Taylor's that really hit the mark for anyone craving a traditional pint.
  • It's got a fabulous atmosphere, especially on match days, where things feel lively and welcoming.
  • Prices are reasonable, making it a solid spot for a casual drink without breaking the bank.
  • The landlord can be a gem when he's on form, going out of his way to make sure everyone has a good time.
Cons
  • There are reports of some pretty unwelcoming behaviour from the owners, like verbal abuse over small purchases, which can really sour the experience.
  • Communication from the staff isn't always up to scratch, with a few folks mentioning it comes across as abrupt or even a bit discriminatory.
  • It doesn't always feel like a public spot for all, with some saying they've been made to feel unwelcome, which is a shame for a traditional pub.
  • The overall vibe can be inconsistent, with recent feedback showing it's not reliably friendly for everyone.

ABUSIVE PUB – STAY FAR AWAY! I went into this pub and bought a pack of cheddar crisps. Because it was one of the "cheaper" purchases, I was verbally abused by both owners. They told me to leave and said I was not welcome, insisting this was not a "public pub." I simply wanted to sit down, charge my phone, eat my crisps, and then get a drink once I was settled. The pub was empty at the time. I was told I had no right to use their electricity. The level of abuse and disrespect I received from the women that owns the pub was absolutely disgusting and left me in shock. Avoid this pub at all costs. Horrible owners.

Went on match day. Friendly service, great atmosphere. Didn't try food so gave 5 as it seems harsh to rate lower on something not tried.

At last! A pub that serves proper cask beer and not vast amounts of Lager and IPA. After three local pubs not having any 'proper beer, l thoroughly enjoyed my pint of Timothy Taylors. Reasonable prices,as well. A proper Pub.

Fabulous traditional London pub serving reasonably priced drinks and excellent beer! The landlord Richard couldn't have done more to ensure me and my group had a great time. Thank you!

Having now read the reviews it is quite clear that the Land Lady is an angry mutt. Pub etiquette aside, good communication is obviously not a thing she does well. I wouldn't say she is racist although there does seem to be a hint of it. But then again going to the pub isn't part of my cultural upbringing, although I have been to a few to know what a welcoming atmosphere is. I had bought a drink and was watching a match which I thought was good etiquette. However there seems to be a number which was permissible. Where I don't mind getting another just to see it wasted to appease the lady having had lunch before going in. Her approach was to start screaming in my face. First I'm not Irish therefore didn't understand enough of what she said to take offence but the Peggy Mitchell esq "get out my pub" did add a bit of comedy to the moment. This was because I only bought one drink. All in all communication could be far better. I couldn't care enough for the place so that's that. Pub should be a lot more welcoming to ensure that they get punter in especially in a diverse community.
