About This Pub

Ah, Wygston's House in Leicester is such a delightful spot, isn't it? Tucked away in the city's oldest standing building, it's been beautifully transformed into a bar and restaurant that just oozes character and warmth. You'll love the friendly staff who make you feel right at home, and the food is generally a winner – think hearty burgers, scrumptious sandwiches, and even specials like steak night that go down a treat with most folks. The drink selection is spot on too, with plenty of real ales and gins to suit all tastes, and it's ideally placed in the Old Town for a bit of exploring afterwards, especially if you snag one of the outdoor seats on a sunny day. That said, it's not without its little niggles; I've heard a few mentions of the steak being a bit dry or some items like the fish fingers sandwich turning out greasier than expected, so it pays to keep that in mind if you're set on certain dishes. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening out, blending history with good vibes and tasty grub, but just go in with realistic expectations for the full experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic building creates a really cosy and unique atmosphere, making it feel like a step back in time while still being welcoming.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always going the extra mile to make your visit enjoyable.
  • Food hits the mark with tasty options like BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, loaded fries, and burgers – it's fresh, well-presented, and full of flavour most of the time.
  • There's a great selection of drinks, including real ales, draught beers, and gins, perfect for a relaxed catch-up.
  • It's in a brilliant spot in Leicester's Old Town, with plenty of outdoor seating for when the weather's on your side.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit inconsistent, like the steak that one person found dry and lacking in flavour.
  • Occasionally, certain items such as the fried fish fingers sandwich might come out a tad greasy, which takes away from the enjoyment.

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich was really good and could be put on a menu in GA! Guacamole Loaded Fries were great as well.

We got the Tues. burger specials. Fresh and tasty and nice presentation. Would've given 5 stars if the fried fish fingers sandwich was less greasy. Nice beverage selection. Great service. Cozy, eclectic space. Lots of outdoor seating if it's not raining.

I went for Thursday Steak Night and ordered the 6Oz Steak Fillet for £16, along with Peppercorn Sauce for an extra £1.50. The steak itself was a little disappointing. It was a little dry and lacking in flavour. The garlic butter the steak had been cooked in brought good flavour to the steak, as did the peppercorn sauce, but none really from the steak itself. However, the sides that came along with the steak were both bountiful and well tasting. The chips and onion rings were crispy, and the mushroom and tomatoes were juicy and tasted great! The staff were very friendly and polite. The establishment is located inside the Wygston House, the oldest house in Leicester, dating back to the 15th. The restaurant is housed within sections of the original timber frame of the house, but within a Georgian renovated section. As such, there is a certain historical atmosphere when seated inside. It is also quite quaintly decorated, which adds a character of it's own.

Amazing food, service & atmosphere. We had our works Christmas meal here yesterday and it was perfect. The food was delicious (and the mulled wine), and the staff were so friendly & helpful. We’re already talking about booking for next year!!

Found this place on an overnight stay in Leicester. Hugely impressed. Very old building, apparently the oldest standing in the city, converted into a pub and restaurant. Absolutely gorgeous inside. Quirky decor, very cosy on a cold night. Food fabulous. Staff so friendly. Next time I visit Leicester I will be coming back here.
