About This Pub

Ah, the Windmill Inn – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a traditional British pub, tucked away in the lovely Derbyshire countryside. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food steals the show; those Sunday lunches are proper winners, with rave reviews about the homemade flavours, generous helpings, and even nods to local suppliers that make you feel good about what you're eating. It's got that inviting, community-spirited vibe where you can pop in for a pint, enjoy the views, or join in on a quiz night – and being dog-friendly adds a nice touch for anyone out exploring. On the flip side, it's not all perfect; a few mentions of service hiccups, like standing at the bar without a glance, suggest it might not always run as smoothly as you'd hope, especially when it's buzzing. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed get-together, but I'd say keep an eye on the timing to avoid any frustrations – after all, it's about enjoying the moment with friends over a well-earned meal.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is an absolute delight, especially those Sunday roasts – think melt-in-the-mouth pork or tender beef with generous portions that leave you feeling well satisfied and it's all great value for money.
  • It's got such a warm and welcoming atmosphere, nestled in the Derbyshire countryside with stunning views, making it a brilliant spot for a relaxed afternoon out.
  • The staff are generally friendly and attentive, creating that cosy community feel, and it's super dog-friendly, which is perfect if you're out for a walk.
  • They've got loads of fun extras like live entertainment and weekly quizzes, plus a solid selection of beers, wines, and cocktails to keep things lively.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss at times, with some folks mentioning waits at the bar without much acknowledgment, which might put a dampener on things.
  • It can get quite busy, especially on Sundays, potentially leading to the odd delay or oversight that takes away from the overall experience.

Was excited to try The Windmill as it’s under new management. Went for Sunday lunch with my young family. The service and ambience was lovely. The food was superb. Absolutely delicious and great value for money. Huge portions. My Auntie took home a doggie bag and it lasted two more meals. My new favourite Sunday lunch in Derby. We will most definitely be back!

I visited last Wednesday (table 103). I went to the bar twice and on both occasions I was left waiting for service with no staff around. The first occasion when staff did appear they carried on doing something around the till with no acknowledgment of me stood waiting, the new landlord appeared to say goodbye to staff also didn’t acknowledge a waiting patron. On the second occasion I went searching for a staff member and managed to find one who was coming up from the cellar. My order was taken but when my food arrived, the sandwich didn’t come with the chips I had paid extra for. I didn’t fancy going on the hunt for a staff member and nobody came and checked the food was ok so ended up out of pocket. Oh well! Food was ok, the bread on sandwich was very dry but the fish was good. I also had 3 of the small plates which were good. The pricing of the food was expensive compared to other top establishments in Derby and was limited in choice. I do like that they use some locally sourced produce. I’ll be back in the future for a pint or two, probably not for food though.

Sunday Dinner did not disappoint. The beef was super tender and full of flavor, Portions were generous, and the presentation was rustic yet inviting. Everything tasted homemade and comforting, like a proper Sunday meal should. The puddings are amazing, great way to finish off a lovely roast! Great atmosphere warm, welcoming & friendly. Staff were lovely and made sure everything was spot on. If you’re after a Sunday roast in a laid-back pub setting, The Windmill’s definitely worth visiting we be going back for sure!
