About This Pub

Ah, the Wagon & Horses in Lancaster – what a lovely little find it is, tucked away on the quayside by the River Lune. I've got to say, it's one of those places that just feels inviting from the moment you walk in, with its historic charm and that riverside vibe perfect for unwinding after a day out. The staff are an absolute treat; they're so friendly and attentive, always up for a chat, which really adds to the homely feel. The food's another winner – think hearty British-Italian fare that's well-prepared and paired nicely with a solid range of ales and wines. And if you're staying over, the rooms are clean and comfortable, with most offering those gorgeous river views, plus a cooked breakfast to set you up for the day. It's brilliant for families or if you've got a dog in tow, as they're made to feel welcome downstairs. On the flip side, though, do keep an eye on the breakfast timings if you're an early riser or have plans – they can be a tad limiting. Oh, and if spice isn't your thing, it's worth double-checking the menu, as one or two dishes might pack more heat than you'd expect. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts; you'd be hard-pressed not to enjoy a visit, but it's always good to go in with a few things in mind for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The location right by the River Lune is absolutely stunning – it's a peaceful spot for a pint or a meal, just a short stroll from Lancaster city centre.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming; they've got that warm, chatty vibe that makes you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a drink or staying overnight.
  • The food is a real highlight, with locally sourced British-Italian dishes that hit the spot, and the Sunday Roast offers brilliant value for money.
  • It's super family-friendly and dog-friendly downstairs, making it easy to bring the little ones or your furry mate along for the fun.
  • The rooms are clean and comfortable, with lovely river views in most, plus handy amenities like free Wi-Fi and a hearty breakfast included.
  • They've got a great selection of Robinsons cask ales and other drinks, plus it's wheelchair accessible with a lift and an adapted room.
Cons
  • Breakfast times can be a bit restrictive, which might not suit everyone, especially if you're on a tight schedule for work or early outings.
  • Some menu items, like certain dishes, might turn out spicier than expected without it being clearly noted, which could disappoint if you're not a fan of heat.
  • While it's generally well-managed, a few reviewers mentioned minor niggles, like the occasional service slip-up, though these seem rare.

Lovely place with great staff - but breakfast times a bit restrictive for business guests. Had 2 stays here over the last few weeks while in the area for work. The pub and rooms are lovely and food is very nice. The location is really nice on the side of the River Lune. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming, especially the lady at breakfast who provides an excellent service to all of her customers! The only thing for me that is a bit of an issue is the breakfast serving times. Breakfast doesn’t start until 8am, this is quite late and makes it a bit of a rush in the morning if you need to get somewhere for work. On my last day the breakfast was a little bit late (which usually would be fine and wouldn’t bother me) but because we were already running to a tight schedule because of the late serving time, it meant I had to cancel the order and just have cereal so I didn’t miss my taxi. Overall though, lovely place with a welcoming atmosphere! I would definitely stay here again if I was visiting as a tourist, but if I was visiting for work I’d have to stay somewhere else because of the breakfast times.

We chose this pub because it was dog friendly and close to our daughter's halls of residence. Everyone's meals were nice except mine. I ordered the 1/2 BBQ chicken. I don't like spicy food and I am careful with what I order. It was very spicy. It did not say on the menu that it was spicy. When we complained we were told it had Cajun spices on it. Nothing at all BBQ about it. This was not mentioned in the description of the meal. If it had been I would not have ordered it. The staff were not very helpful and would not offer a refund. If I wanted to order something else I was told I would have to pay for the extra meal with only a couple pounds discount. If you go here be careful because the description of the meal is not always accurate. It could have been more serious if I had an allergy.

Paid a visit around lunchtime to see my son and his wife playing as the native cult. Only had a drink, lady behind the bar was very helpful, and made a fuss of our dog. All in all a very nice pub.
