About This Pub

Ah, The Three Mariners – what a delightful spot it is, tucked away in Lancaster with all that rich history dating back to the 15th century. I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just warms your heart from the moment you walk in, with its Grade II listed building and a real community feel. The ales are a standout; they're excellent, and there's a massive selection that beer enthusiasts will love, especially from Robinsons Brewery. Pair that with some freshly prepared food using local ingredients – think tasty steak pies, burgers, and even roasts – and you've got a proper treat, especially with those generous portions at fair prices. The staff are an absolute highlight too; they're so attentive and make you feel right at home, which really shines through in the reviews. It's brilliant for families or if you're out with the dog, and they've got a beer garden for those sunny days, plus it's accessible and has some handy modern perks. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – you might find the food isn't always served hot enough or exactly as described, and if it's a popular night, the waits can drag on, leaving you twiddling your thumbs. The pub's small size means it fills up quickly, so it can get a bit lively, and there have been times when a pint didn't quite hit the mark. Overall, though, it's a fantastic place for a relaxed catch-up or to enjoy some live music and quizzes; I'd definitely recommend giving it a go, just maybe plan ahead and keep expectations in check for a balanced experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that wonderful historic charm, being the oldest pub in Lancaster and set in a Grade II listed building from the 15th century – makes you feel like you're stepping back in time.
  • The selection of ales is top-notch, especially from Robinsons Brewery, and it's often praised for its excellent beers and craft options.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make your visit enjoyable, which really adds to the welcoming vibe.
  • The food is freshly made with local ingredients, offering hearty options like steak pie and burgers that are generous in portion and reasonably priced.
  • It's super family-friendly and dog-friendly, with a beer garden, wifi, and even wheelchair access, plus nearby EV charging for a modern touch.
Cons
  • Food can sometimes arrive just warm rather than piping hot, and there might be discrepancies between what's on the menu and what shows up, like that steak pie not being a proper shortcrust case.
  • Wait times for food can be a bit lengthy, especially if the place is buzzing and tables are reserved, which might put you off if you're in a rush.
  • Occasionally, the beer might not taste quite right – one mention of a Dizzy Blonde that was off – so it's worth checking with the bar if something seems amiss.
  • As a smaller, older pub, it can feel a tad cramped when it's busy, making it tricky to find a quiet spot inside or out.

The food arrived and it was warm. Not hot. Only just passable. I had the steak pie but when it arrived it was not as described on the menu ( shortcrust pastry case) it was in a dish with a puff pastry top. Not really a pie. However, the staff were really nice. The service spot on I would suggest going for a beer pass on the food.

Was going to have food here however the wait was too long to wait, must be popular as most tables were reserved. Managed to get a quiet spot inside and enjoy a drink. Old small pub. Has got outside seating. Service good, was one girl on her own but she managed to kee up with all orders. Roast dinner looked okay- smelt nice so imagine it was good, on looking at it on someone Else’s table the veg looked microwaved and the meat didn’t look like it had been carved.. more like packets of sliced meat on the plate - but I could be wrong…

21/09/24: Lovely pub, but the beer didn't taste great. Had a Dizzy Blonde which is usually great but tasted off/pipe cleaner. I also ordered a black & blue burger which was very good!

Visited here whilst in Lancaster with our dog. Came here based off other reviews and it was nearby. My wife and I both had steak pie and chips which was excellent. Everything was homemade and the prices were very reasonable as well, especially given the portion sizes. Massive selection of ales and beers too. Will definitely come back next time we are in the area.

What a friendly and lovely pub. The Irish barmaid was attentive and friendly and really made the visit worthwhile. She couldn't do enough for us, during our visit. I tried a variety of the great craft beers on offer and we also had food. The chicken roast dinner was excellent, as was the burger with cheese and bacon, which came with delicious home made chips, and coleslaw. Great food...great service...great beer. A must visit if you're in Lancaster.
