About This Pub

Ah, Tudors at the White Hart – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper British hideaway, tucked away in St Albans. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that warm, welcoming atmosphere you'd expect from a traditional pub-style restaurant, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel at ease. The food really shines through; folks rave about the steaks being cooked just right and other dishes like the soup and chicken wings packing a flavoursome punch, especially if you're after something comforting without the hefty price tag – deals like Groupon make it even more appealing for a casual get-together. On the flip side, though, it's not all roses; that open fireplace can turn the room into a smoky haze, which might spoil the cosy feel for some, and a few have mentioned thin portions or unexpected extras on the bill that leave a bit of a sour taste. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed meal with mates, as long as you're prepared for the occasional hiccup – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe check for any updates on hours first to avoid any faff.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The food is a real highlight – think perfectly cooked steaks, delicious soups, and tasty chicken wings with a nice kick; it's proper hearty fare.
  • It's got that cosy, traditional pub vibe with wood panelling and an open fireplace, which adds to the charm on a chilly evening.
  • Great value for money, especially if you snag a deal like Groupon, where you get a lovely meal without breaking the bank.
  • The dining room is really nice and relaxed, perfect for a laid-back lunch or dinner in the heart of St Albans.
Cons
  • The fireplace can make the room a bit too smokey at times, which might leave you coughing or wishing for fresher air.
  • Some dishes, like the steak, come in disappointingly thin slices, so it doesn't quite live up to expectations for a hearty meal.
  • There can be surprises with the bill that put a damper on things, like unexpected charges that leave you feeling a tad short-changed.
  • Parking is a hassle if you're not already a customer, as it's private and strictly for those popping in for a bite or a drink.
  • With no website or clear operating hours listed, it's a bit of a faff to plan a visit or get more info upfront.

HI Alison, Please do not email us again. I believe you wanted a free parking and the member of staff refused you to park for free. Our car park is private and it's only for our customers. You were not a customer and wanted to park for free and which is not acceptable HOW DARE YOU tell me not to email you. You are not fit to be a manager and you are a LIAR!!! I have a disabled badge meaning i can park anywhere for free i explained to YOU i had smoke coming from my car whilst stuck in traffic outside your establishment and was awaiting rac breakdown to come and he would be there within an hour as Im disabled and am priority. My issue is with YOU and your disgusting attitude we were happy to eat at your establishment and when i explained to you i have medical condition and asked to see childs menu you firstly told me you dont have kids menu you repeatedly spoke over me as a customer and i asked you to please stop doing that it is height of bad manners and you are a manager and you then said you would not let me have it as i was an adult..i then again told you i have cancer and cant eat very much you then finally said i could have smaller portion!!! After your disgusting attitude towards us we did not want to eat in your establishment and my colleague checked outside and there are double yellow lines which i could park on FOR FREE i did NOT come for free parking you are a liar i just wanted to get the hell away from YOU and i took a chance of moving my car outside as thick smoke was coming from engine. You also proceeded to keep following us around demanding i pay the car park fee after we decided not to eat because of your disgusting attitude !!!!!! I will be taking this further.

A cosy hotel restaurant behind a tiny pub style bar on the ground floor. Wood panel olde pub style decor with an open fireplace burning very smokey briquette 'logs' (not wood logs) - making for a noticeably overly smokey room. Was an OK atmosphere - a busy and noisy Friday evening. Service was awkward, with staff not knowing how to ask properly if we were ready to order, and mumbling when talking back the order. The food was very slow to come, when it did come the temperature was not as hot as it should be. Presentation of the main courses was OK, and all dishes were tasty. Rib-eye steak was good, especially with the peppercorn sauce. They are only 8 ounce steaks - two were ordered, with one being significantly thinner & larger than the other... therefore was slighlty overcooked. Fish and chips is the stand-out star. The same chips are served with the steaks - they are lovely and crispy while being fluffy inside. However, the only salad leaf to be seen on all dishes was a large pile of rocket! The house red was a South African one 'Primordial Soup' - it was an extremely light-bodied red (alcohol content of 13.5%)... too light-bodied for my taste. A 12.5% service charge is automatically added to the bill. I used a Taste card to get 50% off mains (only Monday to Friday).

I had a wonderful experience at The Tudors restaurant at the White Hart hotel Restaurant! The steak was cooked to perfection and delicious but very thin slice . The service was great and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming ,but at the end is a bit down , when the bill arrived, I was surprised to see all items listed, including those already covered by the Groupon voucher I had paid for online. They totaled everything and then added a 12.5% service charge on the full amount before voiding the voucher items. This resulted in a very high service charge, half the value of my voucher. I felt this was quite misleading. However, when the bill arrived, I was surprised to see all items listed, including those already covered by the Groupon voucher I had paid for online , this billing practice left me feeling disappointed and wary. I hope the restaurant can improve transparency in the future.

Went here with a Groupon deal. The staff were friendly and professional, and our steaks were both tasty and cooked well. For the price of the deal, they were a bargain. The dining room was really nice, and we had a relaxed lunch. I love that they have not tried to spruce the restaurant. You can feel the history of the place, and it was fascinating to think of all the people who had eaten in these rooms over the past 600 years.

Such a lovely little place to eat and take in the traditional features of the decor. The Soup of the Day was piping hot and delicious. Chicken wings came with a hot sauce with a great kick and the beef and lamb were tender and well seasoned. We did not stop for drinks at the pub next door, but it looked warm and cozy.. Great staff who were helpful, friendly and welcoming - always makes a huge difference.
