About This Pub

Ah, the Peahen – it's one of those pubs that really grows on you once you step inside. I've had a few visits, and honestly, it's got this warm, stylish feel that's just right for kicking back with friends over a pint or a bite to eat. The food is spot on, with fresh, seasonal options that hit the spot without breaking the bank, and the drinks selection is varied enough to please most tastes. Plus, being dog-friendly and having that lovely courtyard makes it a winner for sunny days or when you're out with the family before 6pm. But, let's keep it real, it's not all perfect – the staff can be a bit hit or miss; sometimes they're lovely, other times they seem a tad off, which is a shame because it could elevate the whole experience. And on busier nights, it does get noisy, so if you're after a quiet catch-up, you might want to pick your time wisely. Overall, though, with its history dating back to 1936 and all the events they put on, it's a solid choice for a good night out in St Albans – just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll likely have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming, making it a perfect spot to unwind with mates after a long day.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks and freshly prepared food that's both tasty and reasonably priced – ideal for a casual meal.
  • It's dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible, which means everyone can join in on the fun.
  • The outdoor courtyard is brilliant when the sun's out, offering a lovely alfresco option in the heart of St Albans.
  • With amazing events and a lively vibe, especially on weekends, it's great for groups or a cheeky night out.
Cons
  • Staff can sometimes come across as a bit miserable or not as chatty, which takes away from the overall experience.
  • It can get a tad loud at times, making it tricky to have a proper chinwag with your friends.
  • There have been occasional issues with facilities, like the restrooms, which might put a dampener on things.
  • The place gets busy, so you might end up queuing or waiting for a table, which isn't ideal on a packed evening.

Relaxed atmosphere, busy and clearly popular across a wide demographic. Good selection of drinks and cocktails, nice furnishings and decor too. Staff, not as friendly or chatty as they are at Saint & Dinner, the sister site at other end of the high street, in fact pretty miserable and felt like I was disturbing them by wanting to order drink and food, maybe just a bad night/one off, but still a good venue to visit on a day or night out in St Alban's.

I visited The Peahen recently, it's a nice place. It was also rather busy, so rather than queue with everyone else, i quickly downloaded their app. It's easy to navigate and gives you options on how well you want your Steak cooked etc. The Flat Iron Steak was great, not too much caramelised onion. There's a good choice on tap as well, I had the Rivertown SIPA. Everything came in a reasonable time considering how busy it was. Definitely worth a visit.

A really nice place to go. The vibe is mellowed and the food isn't too expensive. Went here for a date, and aside from it being a little loud on occasion there were no complaints from me. Ended up having 3 ciders and 3 beers between each other that totaled up to £12.25, as well as some food that cost around £15.00 for the steak and chips and a fish and chips for around £16.00. Not complaining, apparently no parking for this spot but aside from that it was a nice time!

I've eaten here several times and love it every time. Last time I went for a Sunday Roast, it was great. The freshly made Yorkshire pudding was delicious. Good service staff. However, in July 2023, when I just visited, t restroom is broken and use a mobile toilet instead. I hope it will be renovated soon and for sure I will come back to eat here again.
