About This Pub

Ah, the Tolbooth Tavern – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper Scottish hideaway right in the heart of the Royal Mile. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the food is a real highlight; you're talking about tasty, no-nonsense dishes like haggis burgers and fresh fish and chips, all dished up in portions that'll have you loosening your belt a notch or two. Pair that with a solid lineup of whiskies and beers, and you've got yourself a cracking spot for a relaxed meal or a quick tipple after wandering the historic streets. The staff seem to go the extra mile, being efficient and genuinely welcoming, which adds to that authentic Scottish hospitality vibe – and it's lovely to see it's dog-friendly, so you can bring the whole family along. On the downside, it does get bustling at times, especially if you're there during peak hours, which might make it a bit less intimate if you're after a quiet catch-up. Prices are moderate, mind you, but as a tourist favourite, it could feel a smidge steep for everyday visits. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a taste of Edinburgh's spirit – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe aim for a quieter time to fully enjoy the atmosphere.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty Scottish classics like Cullen skink, burgers, and fish and chips, all served in generous portions that leave you feeling well satisfied.
  • They've got a cracking selection of whiskies and beers, making it a brilliant spot for a proper Scottish dram or a pint after a day of exploring.
  • The service is warm and efficient; the staff really know their stuff and make you feel right at home, even when things get busy.
  • Its location on the Royal Mile adds a touch of history and atmosphere – it's dog-friendly too, which is great if you're out with your furry mate.
  • The overall vibe is welcoming and authentic, with a spooky historical edge that makes it a must-visit for anyone wanting to soak up Edinburgh's charm.
Cons
  • It can get pretty packed, especially in the evenings or during tourist season, which might mean less time for a cosy chat with the staff.
  • As a popular spot, it might feel a tad pricey for a casual night out, though the moderate prices are fair for the quality and experience on offer.

Solid food experience with a good whiskey list and efficient service. They were very busy when we visited with a reservation at 6:30 in the evening, so there wasn't time for chatting. The salad was fresh, which always bodes well for overall quality. There weren't any ghost-y experiences while we were there, but the ambiance was spot on. Recommend reservations.

An amazing eatery with delightful details. Food was served quickly and in such large portions. Only my black hole of a son was able to clean his plate. Rather large selection of whisky too.

We stopped in for a pint and ended up ordering food as well. A whole busload of tourists left just as we walked in, so fortunately, there were heaps of free tables to sit at. The bar staff were friendly and efficient, with a nice selection of beers and whiskies. The bar atmosphere was cosy and warm. We ordered Cullen Skink and Beef & Haggis pie, both of which were delicious and filling. The restaurant staff were also very efficient and friendly, and our food arrived promptly. I'd definitely recommend this place for drinks, or a meal while wandering the Royal Mile.

True Scottish hospitality! Tolbooth made our last night in Scotland feel magical. We opted for the Scottish smoked salmon to start, then a haggis burger for me and the steak and haggis pie for my partner. We also couldn't go past cranachan for pudding. All dishes were served promptly by a really friendly team of staff, and tasted delicious. We polished off the lot. The bar boasts a huge whisky selection and the bar staff were very knowledgeable and good with recommendations. My partner really enjoyed talking whisky with the barman! Booking is absolutely essential as they were turning people away. We managed to get a table a couple of hours ahead of time though!
