About This Pub
Ah, The Penny Black – it's one of those spots in Edinburgh that you pop into hoping for a proper good time, and it delivers on some fronts while falling short on others. I have to say, the drinks are a real highlight; they've nailed it with a great range of local craft beers and spirits that feel fresh and exciting, especially if you're after something a bit different from the usual. The interior's been done up nicely too, with that exposed brick giving it a warm, traditional pub feel that's just right for settling in with mates. And the location's spot on, right near the St James Quarter, so it's ideal for grabbing a drink after a wander around the shops or nipping in after work. On the downside, though, I've heard a few tales of service that's not quite up to scratch – some staff seem like they're not in the mood, which can put a damper on things, and there are comments about the place lacking that spark of atmosphere or even smelling a bit musty. Still, if you're looking for a straightforward pint in a decent setting, it's worth giving it a go, but maybe keep your expectations in check and hope for the best on the service front. All in all, it's got potential, but it's not without its rough edges.

Absolutely shocking service last night. No acknowledgement when we walked in and when we left. 2 bar staff standing at end of bar talking with friends. Young lady looked like she did not want to be there.
Place smelt damp.

Good local selection on tap. Beautiful exposed brick interior. Laid back playlist.
Came in to see what they had done with the Black Bull and left sorely disappointed. The place has absolutely no vibe, no atmosphere and no personality. The man behind the bar was horrendously rude to me when I asked for a drink they didn't have. Giving his personal opinion on my drink of choice which I didn't ask for. I had one drink and left. In hindsight I shouldn't even have given them the grace of one after his rude comments.
Tastefully refurbished, The Penny Black is a proper boozer showcasing a great range of local craft beers and an appealing range of spirits. Located just outside the St James Quarter, it's in an ideal location to grab a drink after your shop or for an after work drink or two. It's also right next to the Picardy Place tram stop and has great bus links right on its doorstep. Nice to see a pub with a pool table, which you don't see often these days!
Traditional Scottish music on Wednesday evenings, new clean interior. Good selection of drinks.
