About This Pub

Ah, Three Wise Monkeys – it's one of those places in Colchester that just feels welcoming from the moment you step in, with its mix of a smokehouse restaurant and tap house vibes. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks really rave about the brilliant beer list and their own micro brewery, which pairs beautifully with some solid grub that keeps things hearty and satisfying. The atmosphere is just right – chilled and friendly, with a good crowd that adds to that easy-going energy, and events like live music or a bottomless brunch can turn an ordinary visit into something memorable. On the flip side, it's worth noting that drinks might hit the wallet a bit harder than expected, and you could run into seating woes if you're just with one or two mates, as the tables are often geared towards larger groups. Still, with a solid 4.4 rating overall and recent reviews singing its praises, I'd say it's a winner for beer enthusiasts and anyone after a good laugh, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe plan around the busier times.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant, with a great range of real ales and brews from their own micro brewery that really hits the spot.
  • It's got a chilled and easy-going vibe with a nice buzz from the crowd, making it perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a fun night out.
  • The food is spot on, complementing the drinks nicely, and they've got events like live music and bottomless brunches that add to the excitement.
  • Prices are generally reasonable, especially for what you get, and it's open every day with late hours, so you can pop in whenever the mood strikes.
  • The atmosphere during events, like their drag shows, is fantastic and leaves you with a big smile – it's all about having a laugh and a good time.
Cons
  • Drinks can feel a bit pricey at times, like splashing out nearly £8 for a pint and a half, which might make you think twice on a budget night.
  • Seating isn't always ideal, with big tables that don't suit smaller groups, so you might end up sharing or struggling to find a cosy spot.
  • Some beers you fancy might not be available, as they swap them around between areas, which can be a tad disappointing if you've got your heart set on one.

My daughter suggested we visit the Tap Room but we landed in the bar. It was busy but we were able to get a seat. Beer range was very good but they do swap them between the bar and Tap Room so wasn’t able to try one of their beers I was looking forward to trying. That said, the beers we did try were excellent. I did also try a local gin (Moatwood - also very good) but was a little disappointed by the number of flavoured spirits and would have preferred to see more unflavoured local varieties. It does have a younger vibe but if you are that little bit older you will be made to feel welcome but just accept that on a Saturday night it will be loud. Definitely worth a visit to try their brews.

Attended NowthatswhatIcalldrag! As expected, it was an outstanding show! If you want to laugh and have a fantastic time, be sure to attend one of their shows! The drinks are a little expensive for what they are but overall a great atmosphere.

Just popped in for a pint of real ale while in Colchester town center. I would have liked to see more tables just for 2 people as big tables were only occupied by either 1 or 2 people . The ale was ok but nothing to write home about, for me. Also one and a half pints for nearly £8 , oh well . The pub itself is clean and tidy with friendly staff.
