About This Pub
You know, when I think about The Castle Inn, it really brings a smile – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local gem in Colchester. The atmosphere is just spot on; it's cosy without being overwhelming, and I've heard from a few folks that it's ideal for a casual evening or even a family meal, with plenty of positive vibes from the reviews. The food stands out too – freshly made dishes that hit the spot, and they've got an extensive drinks menu with everything from craft ales to spirits, which is always a winner. Plus, being dog-friendly adds that extra touch of warmth, making it easy to swing by with your pup after a walk. On the downside, though, the interior could do with a bit more character to match its long history; it doesn't quite capture that 1690s magic, and it's a shame about the lack of local beers, as that might leave some ale lovers wanting more. Still, with such high ratings and glowing feedback on the staff and events like the function room, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a good time – I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area, just keep an eye on those opening times to make the most of it.

Cons
-

The operating hours can seem a tad inconsistent, so it's worth double-checking to avoid any surprises.

Great pub serving fantastic Timothy Taylor’s Cask Ales. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Perfectly situated on the high street, right next to the iconic castle.
We visited early on a Saturday night. We were looking for somewhere to have a drink and an evening meal with our 12 year old. We had wandered up and down the high street and couldn't find anything to suit us. Then we happened upon the Castle Inn. Atmosphere was lovely. Not to noisy. But comfortably busy. We ordered the Meat platter for 3 of us to share. The food and the staff were excellent. One of the best meals out we've had for as long as we can remember. Great potions of really well cooked food and topped off by a great price and really helpful and friendly staff. We may never visit Colchester again. But if we do we will be stopping here. Great work from everyone here from bar staff to kitchen. Loved it. Thank you.
Historical pub next to Colchester Castle since 1690. Its a shame that the interior doesn't give much credit to that and no local beers available.
Lovely receptive welcome, service was very good. The food piping hot and very nicely cooked, certainly not a scrimped meal. Would thoroughly recommend.
Booked the function room for my daughter’s 1st birthday, great communication from Marc and Patricia whilst arranging it.
We went for a buffet for our guests and the options served were delicious and suited all ages. Patricia and the team were extremely hospitable whilst we were there and nothing was too much of a problem for them.
Highly recommend booking an event with them!
