About This Pub
Ah, the Three Legged Mare – it's one of those pubs that really stands out in York, with its modern yet cosy setup that makes you feel like you've stumbled into a hidden gem. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the beer selection is a highlight; they've got an excellent array of real ales and craft brews that are always well-kept and full of flavour, which is just what you want after a wander around the city. The staff come across as genuinely friendly and clued-up about their drinks, adding to that warm, community feel that's so inviting. Live music pops up regularly, turning it into a lively spot for a Friday night pint or a casual catch-up with friends. On the flip side, though, a couple of folks have mentioned the prices being on the higher end – that £14 for a double drink sounds a bit eye-watering, so it's something to bear in mind if you're watching the pennies. There was also a note about service not always being as patient as you'd hope, which might spoil the mood if you're in for a laid-back evening. All in all, with a solid 4.4 rating, it's a place I'd recommend for a good time, but go in with your eyes open to get the best out of it.

Cons
-
Prices can feel a bit steep for drinks, like that £14 for a double which left one visitor feeling taken aback – it's worth checking before you order.

Service might occasionally come across as impatient, which could put a dampener on things if you're after a relaxed chat.
-
The operating hours seem a tad confusing from what's listed, so it's best to double-check to avoid any surprises.

Two observations from afternoon visit on 14/6.
(1) Upon asking for a double, the barmaid said that would be £14. So I asked for a single and was impatiently told that £14 was a normal local price. No it isn't. I've been here for thirty years. We had one drink and then went several pubs away for half the price.
(2) Upon explaining I was deaf, the barmaid was impatient, spoke at speed, and made no attempt to make communication easier. All I ask for is a little patience and it's inexcusable to treat someone disrespectfully for making a polite request.
The pub was half empty on a Saturday afternoon. Probably because it's clientele had been bankrupted after buying one round.
Came in for a drink on a Friday night. Everywhere in York was quiet except this place. Very friendly and great music.
The Three Legged Mare has a modern contemporary feel to it. There is an excellent selection of hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales and craft beers. The ones i tried were in excellent condition. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. There is an outside seating area. There are regular live music nights. The pub is featured in the camra good beer guide and is dog friendly. A visit is highly recommended.
We stopped at Three Legged Mare for a quick beer, and honestly, what a find! We came on a Friday and were lucky enough to catch a group of musicians playing, which gave the place such a lively and authentic feel. It’s got so much charm cozy, welcoming, and full of character.
If you’re after a true Northern pub experience with great drinks and a brilliant atmosphere, this is the place to be. We absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend stopping by!
The last Black Sheep pub standing and it's such a good one too.
A full range of Black Sheep ales and ciders were available along with a couple of guest beers were available when I visited.
The staff were amazing, very friendly and knowledgeable about the beer. The beer was very well kept.
I could have stayed there all afternoon watching people and drinking the beer.
