About This Pub

Ah, the Eagle & Child – what a lovely little find in the heart of York. Stepping inside feels like a step back in time with its timber-framed beauty from 1640, and it's got that cosy, welcoming vibe that's just perfect for unwinding with friends over a pint. I have to say, the real ales are spot on; with seven options on tap and all in top form, it's a treat for any beer enthusiast. The food really shines too – everything's homemade with fresh, local ingredients, and the seasonal menus keep things exciting, especially those Sunday roasts that folks can't stop raving about. The staff are an absolute delight, always ready with a smile and quick service, and it's great that they welcome dogs and have options for private events. On the flip side, it's a bit pricier than your average pub grub, so if you're watching the pennies, that might be a downside. Oh, and while the outdoor terrace is charming, it could do with reliable heaters for those unpredictable British evenings. All in all, it's a solid choice for a memorable night out – I'd pop in for the atmosphere alone, but the grub and drinks make it even better.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of this Grade II* listed pub, built in 1640, makes it a real gem in York – imagine sipping a pint in a spot where the Rolling Stones once hung out!
  • A cracking selection of seven hand-pulled real ales, all in excellent condition, plus fresh and locally sourced food that's homemade and changes with the seasons.
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and efficient, creating a relaxed vibe that's perfect for catching up with mates or celebrating with a group.
  • It's dog-friendly and has lovely spaces for private hire, whether you're planning a small gathering or something bigger.
  • The Sunday roasts and other dishes like steak pie get rave reviews for being tasty, well-prepared, and great value overall.
Cons
  • Food prices are a tad higher than some other York pubs, so it might stretch the budget if you're after something more affordable.
  • The outdoor terrace is a nice touch, but the heaters didn't work in one instance, which could leave you chilly on cooler days.
  • Gluten-free pudding options are a bit limited, so if that's your thing, you might miss out on a wider choice of desserts.

The Eagle & Child is a large multi roomed pub with good views from the upstairs lounge. I called in for a drink and was spoiled for choice with seven hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones i tried were in excellent condition. The staff are very welcoming and the pub is dog friendly. It's great that a mainly food pub has such a good selection of real ales. I haven't tried the food, but the menu looked very tempting. It's definitely worth visiting if you are in the area.

The food and drinks here are unbelievable, super tasty. I recommend the Steak and Ale pie and the sticky toffee pudding. A bit pricier than other pubs in York that serve food, but it's worth the price in my opinion. The ambiance inside is great for chatting, having a pint and relaxing with friends.

Lovely venue, great vibe, excellent service and variety of drinks. Lovely outdoor terrace, but would benefit from having electric provided to the heaters, when button was pressed unfortunately there was no heat. Fully appreciate we’ve had a warm spell, but temperatures vary throughout the day: Didn’t eat so can’t comment on food. Would highly benefit from a deep clean and attention to detail.

Loved the food, shame my first preference sold out but some very tasty dishes and just the best steak pie! Great to see chips actually home made too. We really enjoyed the Austrian white wine. It would be great to include something other than brownie or ice-cream for gluten free puddings, although nice, predictable and does not reflect the effort made in your main courses. Will definitely recommend to friends visiting York.
