About This Pub

Ah, Ye Olde Starre Inne – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away in the heart of York. I have to say, chatting about this place feels like sharing a pint with mates over its incredible history; it's been around since 1644 and even played a part in the English Civil War, which gives it that authentic, story-filled charm that's hard to beat. The food's a proper treat too – think mouth-watering burgers and traditional dishes that folks are raving about, with options for everyone, and it's all served up quickly and with a smile from the friendly staff. It's spot on for families or if you're out with your dog, and the beer garden's perfect for a sunny afternoon. On the flip side, though, the drinks do come at a premium; one review mentioned a hefty bill for a few rounds, so it might not be the go-to for a cheap night. Still, with its lively atmosphere for watching sport and that prime location, it's well worth a visit if you're after a memorable pub experience in York – just keep an eye on your wallet!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historical charm is absolutely captivating; it's like stepping back in time to 1644, with its rich past as York's oldest pub and even tales of ghosts that add a fun thrill.
  • The food is a real winner – fresh, traditional pub grub that's delicious and caters to various tastes, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, as raved about in the reviews.
  • Service is spot on; the team is friendly, efficient, and makes you feel welcome, ensuring everything runs smoothly whether you're there for a meal or just a drink.
  • It's wonderfully family-friendly and dog-friendly, with amenities like a beer garden and WiFi, making it a great spot to relax with loved ones or catch up with mates.
  • The atmosphere is unbeatable for watching live sport or soaking in the vibe, and its central location in York makes it easy to pop in after exploring the city.
Cons
  • Drinks can be quite pricey; one chap mentioned forking out nearly £47 for a round, which might sting a bit if you're planning a casual night out.
  • It might get busy, especially in such a historic spot, so finding a seat could be a challenge during peak times, as hinted in a review about its size despite being tucked away.

I can’t thank you enough for our meal on Saturday evening. I booked a table for 10 for a special weekend event for my best friend. The whole experience was seamless. Our food was not only delicious but served so quickly and efficiently. Everyone commented on how nice the food was. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. I was very happy with the table we were allocated in the separate room at the front as we were a large group, we had plenty of space. Everyone liked the character and charm of the pub. Perfect!

Seriously one of the best foods I've ever eaten, and that's coming from someone who studied gastronomy. I went there for the historical experience, wanting to see the old pub but what I was left with was the incredible surprise of having had the best burger of my life!

I do really like this old English pub style but the truth is the price of the drink is ridiculous, I paid £46.65 for two dry martini with lemonade, two pints of cider, one pint of beer and half pint of beer. That’s ridiculous price. It’s dog friendly though. I can’t give any feedback about the food, we only went there for the drinks. Update, We have talked to the pub over the phone this morning, they realised we have been overcharged by mistake and resolved the problem professionally. Everyone can make mistakes. Therefore I will highly recommend Ye Olde Starre Inne and the staff for excellent customer service.

Ye Olde Starre Inn is an absolute gem in the heart of York, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It delivers full marks across the board—whether it’s the food, service, atmosphere, or location, everything about this historic pub is top-notch. The food is exceptional, offering a great selection of classic pub fare done to perfection. Each dish is well-prepared, hearty, and full of flavor, making it the perfect accompaniment to their excellent range of drinks. Whether you're stopping by for a quick pint or a full meal, you won’t be disappointed. Service here is second to none. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. They’re always happy to recommend drinks or dishes and share a bit of the inn’s fascinating history. Speaking of history, the character of Ye Olde Starre Inn is truly something special. As the oldest licensed pub in York, it oozes charm and tradition, with its cozy nooks, timber beams, and warm atmosphere transporting you back in time. It’s a perfect blend of history and hospitality. Lastly, the location is unbeatable—nestled right in the heart of York, it’s an ideal spot to take a break from sightseeing and soak in the city’s unique ambiance. Whether you're a local or a visitor, it’s a must-visit destination. If you're looking for an authentic and memorable pub experience in York, Ye Olde Starre Inn is the place to be. I’ll definitely be returning!

Came for a quick drink, first visit, lots of history and haunting as most places do in York. Located down a small alley, it's actually quite a large place where we could get a seat. Good choice of drinks at reasonable prices. Service friendly.
