About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about the Three Horseshoes – it's one of those classic countryside pubs that's been around since 1880, part of the McMullen family, and it just exudes that relaxed, homely feel you'd hope for in a place like this. I love how they focus on fresh, seasonal grub with daily specials that keep things exciting; it's perfect for a lazy lunch or a proper dinner with mates. The staff are an absolute delight, always on hand with a smile and making sure you're looked after, which really makes the whole experience shine. Plus, with its gorgeous garden overlooking a pond with terrapins, it's a dream on a sunny day, and being dog-friendly adds to the appeal for those who bring their furry friends along. On the flip side, it's not all roses – I've heard a few tales of certain sides or dips falling a bit flat, like they lacked that extra zing, so you might want to keep expectations in check for every bite. Still, with a solid atmosphere inside by the fire and options for private hires, it's a solid spot for a get-together, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the Hertford area, just go with an open mind and enjoy the good bits.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely spot on – fresh, seasonal dishes with daily specials that really hit the spot, making every meal feel like a treat.
  • The staff are wonderfully friendly and attentive, always checking in to ensure you're having a great time, which adds such a warm touch to the visit.
  • It's got a lovely, relaxed atmosphere both inside and out, with roaring fires for cosy evenings and a beautiful garden area perfect for sunny days.
  • Being dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible means it's inclusive for everyone, and the outdoor space with its pond and terrapins is just delightful.
  • They've got a great selection of drinks, from Hertfordshire cask ales to stylish wines and cocktails, plus a function room that's ideal for events or a private gathering.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit hit or miss, like the dips that came with the pretzel – they were described as bland, which might leave you wanting more flavour.
  • It seems the outdoor areas are best enjoyed in good weather; if it's chilly, you might miss out on that alfresco charm and have to stick indoors.
  • While the service is generally excellent, there could be times when things feel a tad varied, as one experience highlighted mixed results with the food offerings.

Had an excellent experience here last night, 5 of us ate. Choice was so good found it hard to choose! We all chose something different and no one was disappointed! Staff were amazing and checked on us throughout making sure we were ok. I need to mention Tamzin and Hayley who were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them, they definitely made a difference to our visit and well 💯 be back. Thank you all

Really lovely pub food, good service and nicely decorated. We didn't use the garden as it's a bit cold but the garden seating area looks lovely and we will definitely return in the summer to spend time out there. I had the market fish with extra broccoli on the side. It was very tasty! We also really appreciated the gluten free menu as we had a coeliac in our party.

Popped in for an early dinner recently. Before I get to the food the service from the gentleman was superb and very attentive. The food however was rather varied in its ratings. The pretzel was nice but there didn’t seem to be the honey mustard as listed so there were two rather bland dips accompanying the beer cheese. The goats cheese tart can only be described as poor and empty and the steak and blue cheese pie was as my wife said ‘ too good to leave any!!’ I’d come in again for sure especially for a pie!!
