About This Pub

Ah, The Chequers – it's one of those classic country pubs that just feels like a breath of fresh air, doesn't it? Tucked away in Stevenage, this place has been around since 1774, originally a farmhouse, and it's got that timeless charm with its listed building status, beautiful gardens, and snug log fires that make you want to settle in for the afternoon. From what I've gathered, the food is a real highlight; folks are raving about the hearty Sunday roasts and fresh bar snacks that leave plates spotless and bellies full. Pair that with the friendly staff who often go the extra mile to make you feel welcome, and it's no wonder it's got such a solid reputation. It's also a top spot if you're out with the dog or exploring the local walks near Knebworth House. On the flip side, though, there are a couple of tales of service not quite living up to the hype – like one chap who had a less than cheerful encounter with a manager, feeling a bit overlooked at first. Still, with most experiences being positive, I'd say it's worth a visit; just keep in mind that, like any pub, it might have an off day. Overall, it's a gem for a relaxed meal and a pint, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of this 1774-listed building really adds a warm, welcoming feel, perfect for a cosy country pub experience.
  • The food is absolutely spot on, especially the Sunday roasts – plenty of rave reviews about hearty portions and fresh, tasty dishes.
  • Staff are generally brilliant, with quick and friendly service that makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's dog-friendly and has lovely gardens and crackling log fires, ideal for a relaxing day out in the Stevenage countryside.
  • A well-stocked bar with cask ales, fine wines, and British gins means there's something for every taste to enjoy.
Cons
  • There have been a few mentions of inconsistent service, like one instance where a manager seemed a bit off-putting and left folks feeling ignored.
  • It might not always hit the mark for everyone, as some experiences suggest it could do with a bit more consistency in greetings and overall hospitality.

I was looking forward to a delicious Sunday roast and I was sadly disappointed. I was first met by a particularly unfriendly manager named Tony who seemed very unhappy. We were ignored for a short while before being asked if we had booked. At no point were we greeted or in the slightest treated with anything resembling warm hospitality. The food was a little slow coming out and was missing a meal. The food was so bad we skipped the late meal for a refund. I was dissatisfied with the entire experience, mostly by the demeanour of the manager Tony. There wasn’t an apology or any accountability on his part. I recommend avoiding this place if you want good for or warm hospitality. Furthermore the prices have no bearing on the quality of food, they charge as much as possible. Go to Tesco and get a microwave meal it’s cheaper and superior service

The Chequers is a lovely, picturesque pub, both inside and out, with extremely warm and friendly staff who made me feel immediately welcome. The Sunday roast was very good with it and my selected drinks arriving very promptly. Indeed, the service from my dedicated waitress was excellent throughout, and her very cheery demeanour and attentiveness made the whole experience much more enjoyable. Although I don’t have a name, she served the sole gentleman on a 12.30 reservation on Sunday, 25 May - hopefully, this will be enough info for management to be able to pass on my very positive feedback. I would highly recommend this venue to anyone thinking of trying it.
