About This Pub
Ah, The White Lion – it's one of those classic pubs in Grantham that really captures that warm, community feel, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the staff stand out as the real stars; they're incredibly helpful and accommodating, whether it's sorting out an early arrival or just making you feel right at home. The location is spot on too, just a stone's throw from the town centre with plenty of shops and eateries nearby, which makes it ideal if you're popping in for a pint or needing a base for exploring. Plus, the rooms have that nice blend of old-school character and modern comforts, and it's brilliant for groups enjoying events like festivals – the pub downstairs has a great vibe with a solid drink selection. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; the noise from the pub can carry up to the rooms, especially on lively nights, and there've been mentions of heating issues that might leave you a bit chilly. Also, some of the locals can be a tad unwelcoming, making it harder to get served or settle in if you're not a regular. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together or a quick stay – just keep those little downsides in mind, and you'll likely have a cracking time!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and really go out of their way to make you feel welcome, like when they sorted out early check-ins or helped with little issues.
-
It's in a brilliant spot in Grantham, right near shops, takeaways, and the town centre, making it super convenient for a night out or exploring.
-
The rooms are clean and spacious with a touch of that classic old English charm, plus all the modern bits you need for a comfortable stay.
-
Great for groups or events, like festivals, with a welcoming atmosphere in the pub downstairs and a good selection of drinks to enjoy.
Cons
-
The pub downstairs can get quite noisy, which might disturb you if you're trying to relax in your room, especially on busier nights.
-
There have been a few niggles like heating problems in some rooms, which could make for an uncomfortable stay on chillier evenings.
-
Some of the regulars aren't the most welcoming, making it a bit tricky to get to the bar or feel at ease if you're new to the place.
-
It seems like it might not always be the quietest spot overall, so if you're after a peaceful retreat, it could fall short.

First few staff were very friendly, and there was only one issue with heating at night, but the portable heater was located. Garden for smoking if your a smoker pub downstairs can be noisy, but there is a pub below, so it's expected. Apart from that specific nights which was in January i was able to sleep and use facilities such as shower etc.
I went to this pub to see a band play. I could not get to the bar for regulars, who sat at bar stools, I had to go between them and reach over to get my drink and pay the Barmaid. Staff were very polite and courteous but the locals were not welcoming at all. As a late 50 year old single person on my own, I didn't feel safe or welcome at all. No-one spoke to me or approached me to welcome me and it was a very daunting experience. They have a beer garden but if you are a non smoker you wouldn't want to go out there. There is hardly any on street parking as the pub is on a main road.
They don't serve food and it wouldn't be suitable for wheelchair access because the doors are narrow and there is a step to the toilets and no disabled toilet.
The owner was very friendly and helpful. Location is close to town and has lots of shops and takeaways a stones throw for the Hotel. Very quiet no drama in the hotel. The room was spacious and clean. The building had lots of old English character from it's age but had all the mod cons. I couldn't have been happier. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who thinking of staying there.
7 of us stayed at the White lion for the forbidden forest festival weekend, we all had a great time, clean rooms and bathrooms, the landlord and landlady were great hosts, always happy to help. Would definitely recommend the pub downstairs also, a nice crowd with a great selection of drinks
I came to stay at the white lion for the weekend whilst attending a local festival. The staff were amazing. We needed to arrive earlier than the usual check in and the owner Sean was more than accommodating. Upon arrival Amanda dropped what she was doing to come and let us in and show us around, even opening the bar a little early so we could have a drink before heading to the festival!
The room itself was perfect for the two of us but would have accommodated 3 of us! It had very stylish decor and all the necessities, kettle, sink and lots of storage space. The beds were super comfy too. There are shared toilets/showers but 2 of each meaning one is always free. There is also a communal kitchen like area with a fridge, microwave and grill. All areas were immaculate.
Once we arrived back from our day out both staff and regulars in the pub downstairs from the b&b were very welcoming and made us feel at home.
Amanda and sean were on call if we needed anything and were super helpful throughout the weekend! Should the same festival happen in the same area i would definitely book again!
