About This Pub

Ah, The Whimsey – it's one of those neighbourhood gems that just draws you in with its warm, unpretentious charm. From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, it's got this lovely mix of Wolves memorabilia on the walls and a lineup of entertainment that keeps things lively, whether it's karaoke nights or catching a live performance. The staff really shine here; they're understanding and accommodating, like when they helped out with a family gathering after a tough time – that kind of personal touch makes all the difference. It's brilliant for a casual get-together with mates, with outdoor seating for when the weather's playing nice and a good range of drinks to keep the conversation flowing. On the flip side, if you're hoping for a hearty meal, you might be out of luck since it's mostly just snacks like fresh cobs on weekends, no proper hot food to speak of. And honestly, while most people rave about it, there are a few who find it a bit ordinary, like it's just your average pub without that extra spark. All in all, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – it's got heart, but keep expectations realistic for a relaxed, no-fuss evening.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's got a great vibe with loads of entertainment options like bar games, karaoke, live music, and even sports screenings – perfect for a fun night out.
  • The atmosphere is cosy and casual, ideal for catching up with friends or groups, and they've got outdoor seating for those nicer evenings.
  • They offer a solid selection of drinks including beer, spirits, and wine, plus some tasty fresh cobs or rolls on weekends to keep things simple and satisfying.
  • Accessibility is spot on with wheelchair-friendly entrances and car parks, so everyone can join in the fun.
Cons
  • Food options are a bit limited – no hot meals on offer, which might disappoint if you're after a proper pub grub experience.
  • It doesn't quite stand out as extraordinary for some; one visit felt just okay, like a standard local spot without anything particularly wow-worthy.
  • The website's a tad basic and doesn't give much detail, so you might need to pop in to get the full picture before deciding.

First things first, the 4* for food is because they don’t offer hot food and don’t want to confuse anyone. They do however offer delicious fresh cobs/rolls on the weekend and the crisps are giant grab bags nom nom nom. The Whimsey is a place I first visited a few years ago under different management and tbh I can’t remember much because I was sloshed. Anyway it’s reopened with new management and it’s now become my favourite local. Plenty of drinks to choose from. Extremely friendly staff who go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The building is very old but in very good shape. It’s clean, surprisingly roomy yet has a great atmosphere. The locals are typical of the area and are very friendly and welcoming. There’s your traditional bar area to sit yourself or you can go round the corner and sit in what used to be the snug (presumably). There’s also an extended bit that has comfy couches. The garden is cosy but very well kept and private. Plenty of tvs to watch football on or the music videos and there’s always some sort of entertainment being planned. The prices are very very good considering some of the other pubs in the area but for me it’s the bar staff and locals who will keep me coming back. That and it’s only 100m from my house, but mostly the staff and the locals….and beer.

We recently booked a room with Stephen at the Whimsey, for a family gathering after our mother's funeral service, with the buriel just around the corner at Willenhall Lawn Cemetery. Stephen was so understanding to our situation and spoke with us a few times prior to check exactly what we would like. The Whimsey supplied all the catering which consisted of soup & sandwiches, curry & rice, also tea & coffee, at a very reasonable price. We had the whole pub to ourselves from 1-3pm, until he opened, however we could stay as long as we liked. We would like to thank Stephen and all at the Whimsey for making this day so special. We totally recommend this venue for any family events
