About This Pub

Ah, The West Gate in Bath – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local gem, with its roots going back to the 1600s and all that lovely historical flair. I have to say, it's brilliant for sinking a pint or two; the beer selection is spot on, offering a nice blend of local favourites and well-known ones that make every visit feel special. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance – lively enough for the footy or rugby action on the screens, but still chilled out for a good natter with friends. The staff are genuinely friendly, always ready with a smile and quick to sort you out, which really adds to the welcoming feel. On the downside, though, if you're thinking of grabbing some food, it's worth noting that waits can be a right pain – one person mentioned waiting over an hour for sandwiches, and others weren't too keen on the burgers, saying they were a bit disappointing. Still, for drinks and soaking up that historic ambiance, it's a top choice. All in all, I'd recommend swinging by if you're in Bath, just maybe plan for drinks first and food elsewhere if you're in a rush.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is just spot on – it's lively yet relaxed, making it perfect for everything from a casual catch-up to watching the big match.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers, with a mix of local brews and classics that really hit the spot.
  • The staff are warm and attentive, always up for a chat and making you feel right at home.
  • It's family-friendly and spacious, ideal for groups or a bite after exploring Bath.
  • The historic charm, with original features like wood floors, adds a lovely touch of character to your visit.
Cons
  • Food can take an absolute age to arrive, which might leave you a bit frustrated if you're peckish.
  • Some dishes are a bit hit and miss – like those burgers that didn't quite live up to expectations.
  • The service isn't always on point with updates, so you might end up waiting without much warning.
  • It can get busy, which sometimes means things feel a tad disorganised during peak times.

Looking for a place for our family to have dinner after visiting the Roman Baths. It was between here and one other. So glad we chose The West Gate! The Small Plates were amazing! Sticky Chicken was delicious as were the Cod Gonjons. Highly recommended if you are in Bath!

I didn’t order any food so I can’t make any comments about it other than everyone else in the pub appeared to be happily eating something. The menu has many options. The place is very large inside so it’s a good choice for larger gatherings. There’s a variety of beers available and a selection of ciders. Also important “comfortable chairs”.

I hate leaving bad reviews but this place is terrible. Avoid! We waited an hour for two sandwiches. When I went to the bar after 45 mins to ask about our food, the bar staff was very nonchalant about it and said there’s always a long wait. Had we have been told about this when we ordered we would have gone someone else. They radioed the kitchen to ask where our food was and they said “2 minutes”. The food arrived fifteen minutes later. When my steak sandwich turned up, I had to send it back as it had very little steak in it, one sandwich had tiny piece of steak in it about the size of a match box! The second turned up and if this is what this particular Greene King pub thinks is acceptable for £10.50 no wonder the pub trade is in crisis! (The photos are the sandwich they brought be back out after apologising). There was hardly any steak in it and it looked and tasted like the trimmings from an old roast dinner. The steak dry and tough and not pink as I’d order. The bread was stale and look as though someone has already had a go at eating it! I’m assuming I annoyed the chef for sending my food back! The couple next to us had a similar experience. There roast dinners turned up stone cold. They were offered a free drink rather than replacing the food as the kitchen was very busy! The toilets were an absolute disgrace. Dirty, damaged and very smelly. The men’s toilet were absolutely filthy, urine all over the floor, soiled and damaged plasterboard walls and panelling. My wife used the ladies toilet and said it was worse than a public toilet. It clearly hadn’t been properly cleaned in a long while as there was mould! Sadly we used toilet after our meal. If this is what the public facing areas are like, I dread to think what the rear of house and kitchen are like! Shocking service, shocking food quality. Pretty run down pub. We used to be loyal Greene King customers, genuinely I have to question this! £35 for two drinks and a two crap sandwiches! Avoid! Edit: The Manager telephoned me to apologise. I didn’t add on my original review that we received a full refund.

Unfortunately the food is the reason we came into the pub, and it was extremely disappointing :/ The staff was great and the atmosphere was nice, so I would recommend going in strictly for drinks. We both got the cheddar and bacon burgers, and I am so sorry to say but this was one of the worst burgers I have had out at a pub or restaurant. It was so so dry that even massive amounts of ketchup couldn’t save it, and on top of that, mine was extremely burnt/charred on the bottom and I didn’t want to finish it. Tasted like something your grandad grills on the barbecue and burns but you eat it anyways :(
