About This Pub
Oh, The Wenlock Arms is one of those gems you stumble upon and think, 'Why haven't I been here sooner?' It's a proper 19th-century ale house that's kept its charm intact, with a fantastic lineup of beers that changes regularly – think top-notch cask ales from brewers like Siren and Oakham, alongside keg options and ciders that keep things exciting for beer enthusiasts. I love how it's got that homely feel, with a log fire and darts for a bit of fun, and it's surprisingly welcoming for families, thanks to the outdoor area and a playground just across the way, making it ideal if you're out with the kids. Prices are fair too, so you won't feel short-changed. On the flip side, the food's pretty basic – mostly pies and toasties – so if you're hoping for a hearty dinner, you might be disappointed, and it does get quite lively with the locals, which is great for atmosphere but could feel a bit cliquey if you're new. Still, with its high ratings and that community spirit, it's well worth a visit for anyone looking for an authentic pub experience in London, just maybe plan around their Monday closure.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely top-notch, with a constantly changing range of cask ales, keg beers, and real ciders from brilliant independent brewers – it's a real treat for anyone who loves a good pint.
-
It's got that warm, welcoming community vibe, perfect for popping in for a chat, with cosy touches like a log fire and a darts board that make it feel like a proper old-school boozer.
-
Family-friendly options are a nice surprise, especially with outdoor space and a nearby park, so it's great if you're out with little ones and want a relaxed spot.
-
Prices are spot on for London – inexpensive and reasonable, meaning you can enjoy a few drinks without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
The food menu is a bit limited, mostly sticking to pies, toasties, and a few vegan options, so if you're after a full meal, you might need to head elsewhere.
-
It can feel quite local and busy at times, which is charming but might make it a tad overwhelming if you're not a regular, or if you're visiting on a packed afternoon.
-
They're closed on Mondays, which is a shame if you're planning a mid-week visit and fancy a drink.

A great pub. Very comfortable with little ones as there is a space to grab a drink outside, and in addition a little park and a playground just across the street. We love to come with our toddler as all of us can enjoy 😉
Fantastic old school community boozer. Seriously good lineup of beers for the aficionado at really reasonable prices. Cask ales exceptionally conditioned. Darts board, log fire too.
A lovely pub on a housing estate close to Angel and Old Street.
The pub sells a wide range of cask ales and a small selection of bottled beers including some from Belgium.
I did not see a food menu, but the bar staff appeared to be making many cheese/cheese and ham sandwiches ready to become toasties.
I drank an excellent pint of stout.
On my visit very much a locals' pub, but certainly welcoming and polite. Busy even on a Saturday early afternoon. Beers well kept e.g. 5 points derailed porter, which is always a pleasure to see on in autumn. 3 or 4 cask beers on.
What you need a pub to be. A square corner, preserved heritage, vibe focused London community pub with independent brewery legacy. Plenty of pub swing doors into a spacious drinking hall with centrepiece square bar. Vintage, decorative papered ceiling and walls. Simple, classic droplet lamps, understated coving, archway and subtle curved wall edges against the large, name painted windows. It's light and calm in this relaxed, volume appropriate happy classic tuned, friends and community social house. The back bar is an original gem with decorative mirroring, decorative, aged pillars and feature figurines on the overhead with a well loved, vintage bar front and counter. There's wide wood floorboard, bench edge seating and mini stools, comfortable in space and feeling. The original fireplace is overlooked by a heritage cut glass brewery mirror. Vintage decorative pub arts feature on the walls. There's darts and a piano you can imagine many gather rounds have been held. The superb selection of small batch, independent beers on draught compliment this hidden beauty pub with heritage vibes in it's own confidence in the past and what it represents.
