About This Pub

Ah, The Volunteer – what a gem of a pub tucked away in London! From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got that timeless charm of a proper old-school boozer, where you can sink a pint of something classic like Spitfire or Guinness without it costing an arm and a leg. The staff really shine through in the reviews; they're described as friendly and efficient, always ready with a smile and even a free sample or a chat about the latest match. It's especially lovely for sports fans, with folks raving about the welcoming vibe during big games, whether you're a local or just popping in from out of town. On the flip side, the operating hours can be a bit of a puzzle – it says it's open most days, but there might be some inconsistencies that could spoil plans if you're aiming for a nightcap. Plus, without a website, it's not the easiest to get the lowdown beforehand, and it might not tickle the fancy of anyone after a more upscale experience. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening; I'd say give it a go if you're in the area – you might just find yourself returning for that cheese and onion toastie!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The drinks are incredibly reasonably priced, making it a brilliant spot for a cheeky pint without breaking the bank.
  • The staff are so friendly and accommodating – always up for a chat and making you feel right at home.
  • It's got that classic, welcoming local pub vibe, perfect for catching up with mates or enjoying big events like rugby or football matches.
  • They offer simple, tasty grub like hotdogs and toasties at fair prices, which adds to the homely feel.
  • The atmosphere is spot on for newcomers and regulars alike, with a real community spirit that makes every visit memorable.
Cons
  • The operating hours seem a bit inconsistent or potentially limited, with some confusion in the schedule that might leave you caught out if you're planning a late one.
  • There's no website listed, so it's tricky to check details online before heading over, which could be a hassle if you're not local.
  • While it's generally top-notch, the place might feel a tad outdated for those after something more modern, like fancy cocktails or trendy decor.

First visit here, total flashback to a proper 1970s proper pub. Barmaid/lady/person was so friendly and efficient. Cheaper than anywhere else and also cheaper than pubs in NE England. Looking forward to returning for a cheese and onion toastie.

Great little local Pub just a 5 min walk from the premier inn , locals are friendly and welcoming, spent the night before and after the Cup final 2025( as a Newcastle fan ) in there and everyone was so welcoming, wishing us luck and all the best and then congratulations when we won it. Made our weekend just that bit more special. Thanks to everyone there🖤🤍

Very nice and friendly pub with fair prices, the pub owner( the lady and the man ) are so friendly. Provided free roasted potato at the FIFA World Cup final, the hotdog 🌭 is very tasty and fresh, we had pint of carlsburg and Guinness, the lady also provided me some for trying. The toilet is at a decent Hygiene level👍🏻 Big thanks for them helping me find back my scarf after left the bar 1hour. I love the services and atmosphere, everyone felt very welcomed and cared, you did very good job!
