About This Pub

Ah, The Victoria – it's one of those Oxford gems that really hits the spot for a relaxed pint and a hearty meal. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the place has had a smart refurb, giving it that fresh, inviting feel with a lovely garden to boot, which is just perfect for sunnier days or even a cosy evening by the fire. The drinks selection is spot on, with real ales and thoughtful pairings that make every sip feel like a treat, and the food like their pies and small bites offers great value at moderate prices. It's got that classic pub atmosphere where you can settle in for a game or just chat away, and most folks rave about the friendly staff who go the extra mile. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses – I've heard tales of dodgy seating from online bookings, staff seeming a tad short on busy evenings, and waits for food that can stretch your patience. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.5, it's clear this spot does more right than wrong, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after a proper British pub experience, just maybe keep an eye on the timing and book wisely.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The pub's recently refurbished interior is stylish and welcoming, making it a lovely spot to relax in.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, including real ales and great pairings with food like pies.
  • The food is generally spot on, with tasty options like the veggie pie or chicken and mushroom one, and it's all at a moderate price that's good value.
  • The atmosphere is brilliant, especially in the garden or by the cosy real fire, perfect for a chat or even a game of Scrabble.
  • Staff are often friendly and helpful, adding to that warm pub feel we've all come to love.
Cons
  • Reservations can sometimes lead to being seated in less than ideal spots, like near the dishwasher, which might put a dampener on things.
  • On busier nights, the staff might come across as a bit gruff, which isn't always the friendliest experience.
  • Wait times for food can drag on, like nearly 40 minutes in some cases, when you're hoping for a quicker bite.
  • There have been mix-ups with orders, such as getting the wrong side, and some reckon the menu changes have made the food not quite as good as before.

This is the best pub in Oxford! It has recently been refurbished, very stylish interior and lovely garden. Great selection of drinks, good food and great atmosphere. The staff are great and the manager was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely revisit.

Food, beer, and atmosphere were all decent, though we were a little put off by having made an online reservation only to be stuck in a back room next to the dishwasher. (There are other tables available, so we moved.) Staff seemed a bit gruff in general but perhaps it was a busy night.

It's almost become a routine to come here on a Sunday morning with my mum, for a pie, a pint (of Diet Coke) and (half) a game of Scrabble. During our most recent visit, the friendly young man behind the bar even changed the music at her request. The food is great, and there's a selection of board games, should it tickle your fancy. Reliable, consistent, and delicious!

The beer garden was lovely and it was nice and chill. The beer and food was alright, somehow I remembered it to be better before the menu changed. It took almost 40min for the food to be served and I got the wrong side. But it’s okay as we’ve still enjoyed our meal.

With two real ales on tap and a cozy real fire, it perfectly captures the essence of a classic British pub. The pub serves simple yet satisfying pub food, making it an excellent spot for a casual meal. One of the standout features of The Victoria is its heated garden, which becomes an ideal retreat during the summer months, especially after 4 pm.
