About This Pub
Ah, The Viaduct Tavern—it's one of those places that really captures the essence of old London, doesn't it? I mean, with its haunted reputation and ties to Newgate Prison, it's got that thrilling mix of history and a good old pub feel that makes you want to linger over a pint. The drinks are spot on; they've got this fantastic range of gins and ales that keeps things exciting, and I love how the staff are always so chatty and accommodating—it just makes the whole experience feel welcoming. It's in such a handy location too, right by St Paul's, so it's ideal for a quick stop after a wander around the sights. On the flip side, it's a small spot, so if you're heading there on a Friday evening, be prepared for it to be buzzing and a bit tight on space; I remember trying to nab a table and finding most were booked up, which can be a bit frustrating. The food's straightforward—think tasty toasties and pies that pair well with a drink—but it's not exactly a place for a fancy dinner. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're after that authentic pub atmosphere with a dash of the supernatural, but maybe plan ahead to avoid the crowds and make the most of it. I'd say it's worth a visit for anyone who appreciates a good yarn and a decent bevvy, but keep in mind it might not suit if you're after something more spacious or gourmet.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic and haunted vibe is absolutely fascinating—it's like stepping back in time with its old prison cells and links to London's dark past, making it a must-visit for anyone into a bit of spooky history.
-
They've got an impressive selection of beers, ales, and gins, including some cracking Fuller's options and even alternatives like Black Cab Stout that's a nice twist on the classics.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and helpful advice, which really adds to the warm atmosphere.
-
It's in a brilliant spot near St Paul's and other landmarks, perfect for a quick pint after exploring the city.
-
They offer simple but tasty food like toasties and pies, and it's great for private events if you're planning something special.
Cons
-
The pub is quite small, so it can get really packed, especially on busy evenings, which might make it feel a bit cramped if you're after a relaxed catch-up.
-
Tables often get reserved, so you might struggle to find a spot, particularly if you pop in without planning ahead.
-
The food options are a tad limited, mostly sticking to straightforward pub grub like pies, so if you're hoping for a full meal, it might not quite hit the mark.
-
It can be on the quieter side at certain times, like midday, which is fine if you want peace, but less so if you're up for a lively buzz.

I kinda jumped on the hype of this apparently being one of the most haunted london pubs and needed to take a visit.
The pub itself is quite small. Most tables were reserved, but I had a drink and chilled for a bit at a table, whilst there was hardly anybody about. I visited just after midday and guess this place gets really busy at lunchtime and after work.
There was a food selection and picky bits like pies and scotch eggs.
Good drinks selection, renowned for its extensive gin list, the choices looked great.
Staff okay, clean premises. Toilets downstairs, giving an eerie feeling lol, otherwise nothing too special
Stated to be the most haunted pub in London!
Opposite the Old Bailey criminal court, this building has seen much dark history including the remains of prison cells in the cellar linking to Newgate Prison built in the 12th century and demolished in the early 1900s.
Public outside executions took place here and the pub was used to view these public hangings!
The pub is known for poltergeist activity and paranormal investigation teams have studied this site. The toilets are downstairs in the cellar area and it definitely feels eerie!
A true piece of old London living history and a truly special place to visit when visiting the city.
Nice small pub by Royal Courts of Justice and St Bartholomew's Hospital. Fullers pub with a good selection of beers, wine and spirits. Staff were friendly and welcoming
Great old style pub with classic mirrored walls and engraved ceiling. Good selection of beers and ales on draught. The gin range is impressive.
It's a really nice pub, but typically packed on a Friday evening.
The Black Cab Stout is a nice alternative to Guinness and has a really cool glass, which you can see in one of my pictures.
Very friendly, helpful staff.
I didn't eat here, so I haven't rated the food.
