About This Pub

Oh, what a treat The Blackfriar is – it's one of those pubs that really captures the spirit of old London, with its incredible Art Nouveau design that makes you stop and admire the place the moment you walk in. I love how they've kept all the original features like the jolly friars in the sculptures and mosaics; it's like having a bit of history with your pint. The beers are top-notch, with a great variety that keeps things interesting, and the food hits the spot too – think proper British classics like sausage and mash or fish and chips that are comforting and full of flavour. The staff are generally lovely, always up for a chat, which adds to that welcoming vibe. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect; I've heard a few tales of food not quite living up to expectations, like overcooked sausages that could do with a bit more care, and service can be a bit slow when they're rushed, leaving you twiddling your thumbs for the bill. Still, with such a high rating from so many visitors, it's clear this place knows how to shine, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone wanting a taste of London's pub scene – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a brilliant time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic Art Nouveau building is absolutely stunning, with all those quirky sculptures, mosaics, and even stained glass windows that make you feel like you're stepping back in time.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of beers on tap, perfect for anyone who loves a good pint – it's one of those places where you can always find something new to try.
  • The staff are really welcoming and friendly, which makes the whole experience feel warm and inviting, especially if you're popping in for a quick chat.
  • The traditional British dishes like sausage and mash or fish and chips are spot on – hearty, tasty, and just what you fancy after a day exploring London.
  • It's got such a lively atmosphere, with that unique monastery theme that's fun and engaging, and on a nice day, you can even take your drink outside to enjoy the fresh air.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; for instance, some dishes like the veggie sausages might come out overcooked, which is a bit disappointing if you're looking forward to them.
  • Service can sometimes drag on, like waiting ages for the bill, which might leave you feeling a tad frustrated in a busy spot.
  • It gets quite packed, especially in the dining area, and that can lead to the odd moment where staff seem a bit short-tempered if things get hectic.

I had already been there several times for their veggie sausages and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately this time the quality of food was not satisfactory as the sausages were really overcooked! Yet the choice of beers was great and the staff very welcoming as usual. The place is fantastic!

Fantastic place to try some classic English dishes. I really liked the sausage and mash and fish and chips in particular. The atmosphere and design of the dining area is also one of the best in the city. The service was fine but took some prolonged waiting to get our receipts etc. Overall highly recommended though!

A great little pub! Very traditional looking...and quirky. In warm weather you can make use of the public grass area outside, and the benches on the street. I was welcome to take my glass outside and sit on the grass. Very refreshing...pardon the pub. An obnoxious customer in front of me was dealt very patiently by the staff. Respect to them! The service is very good here, they are very inclusive.

GREAT PUB! highly recommend this place! it’s a busy spot but for good reason! it’s the first themed pub, made to look like an old monastery. really cool art work on the walls & a stain glass window! only complaint is that the dining area is beautiful & the worker got annoyed with just us for going to have a quick look at the room! Highly recommend the london pride beer, local & delicious!

We popped in for lunch, and shared a sandwich, chips and salad. We also enjoyed a beer and Pimm’s. The real reason to visit, is the amazing architecture. It’s really cool inside, plus, close to the Tate Modern.
