About This Pub
Oh, what a treat Ye Olde Mitre is – it's one of those pubs that just pulls you in with its rich history dating back to the 16th century, and I can see why it's got such glowing feedback from everyone who's popped in. The atmosphere is spot on, with cosy nooks, dark wood everywhere, and even old maps that make you feel like you're part of London's past; it's perfect for sinking into a good chat over a pint. The drinks are a highlight too – a solid range of real ales and wines that hit the mark, paired with tasty homemade snacks like toasties and scotch eggs that go down a treat. The team behind the bar are an absolute delight, always up for a bit of banter, which makes the whole place feel like a friendly local hangout. On the flip side, it's hidden away in an alley, so you might have to hunt for it a bit, and once you're in, space can be at a premium, especially when it's buzzing, which might not suit if you're after somewhere more spacious. All in all, it's a fantastic spot for a relaxed evening or even private events upstairs, and I'd say it's well worth seeking out for a proper pub experience, as long as you go in with realistic expectations about the size and location.

Cons
-
It's tucked away down a narrow alley, so you might walk right past it if you're not paying attention, which can be a bit of a faff to find.
-
The space inside is quite snug, meaning it can get crowded on busier evenings, and you might end up jostling for a spot or waiting for a table.
-
As a historic spot in central London, prices are on the moderate side, which might add up if you're planning a longer session, especially compared to more out-of-the-way pubs.

Hidden down an alley, I only found this pub because I was looking for the church behind it. I stopped for a glass of wine and a toastie, both of which were above par, and had a brief respite in the tiny patio area, in the rear. Great staff. A true gem of a pub.
Amazing and ancient pub down a narrow alleyway in Holborn. Drinking in both a 'standing' outside zone, and in a cramped but atmospheric interior with lots of original wooden furniture and panelling. Decent range of beers, at fair prices for London. Worth a visit!
Tucked down a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it alleyway in Holborn, Ye Olde Mitre is a historic pub that feels like stepping into a time capsule. Dating back to 1546, this charming spot oozes character with its low ceilings, dark wood paneling, and cozy nooks, making it a perfect slice of old London. The rich history—ties to Elizabethan England and a rumored haunt of Charles Dickens—adds a layer of intrigue that’s hard to beat.
The ambiance is unbeatable: warm, welcoming, and quintessentially British, it’s the kind of place where you can settle in with a pint and feel like a local. The ale selection is stellar, showcasing well-kept traditional cask ales, and the lunch menu offers hearty pub fare—think pies, sandwiches, and ploughman’s—that hits the spot without breaking the bank. Service is friendly, with staff happy to share tidbits about the pub’s storied past.
Ye Olde Mitre is a must-visit for anyone exploring London, offering a delightful pause for a pint and a bite in an atmosphere steeped in history. Seek it out—you won’t be disappointed!
The oldest pub in London (1547).
You can see how small the pubs were in 16th century, with small windows and a very special atmosphere.
Loved the old maps of London on the wall where you can see what all the streets looked like back in the day.
Highly recommend a visit!
Stopped in to enjoy a pint and scotch egg on the outside alley at Ye Olde Mitre (est 1546). Didn’t realize until tasting the Poseidon porter that it was gluten free. Great service and with lots more seating and tables outside and additional inside space when you keep walking past the entrance.
