About This Pub

Ah, The Toll Gate – it's one of those neighbourhood pubs that's been around for ages, since 1988 no less, and it still holds that warm, welcoming charm for a good old pint and a chat. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the beer is reliably excellent and at a price that won't break the bank, which is always a win on a Friday evening. The staff, particularly the bar folks, come across as genuinely friendly and eager to make your visit enjoyable, and little touches like the darts and pool table add a fun element that keeps things entertaining. It's clear this place has built a loyal following as a go-to spot for unwinding with mates or even grabbing a bite, with promotions and events adding to the buzz. On the flip side, though, there are a few niggles that keep it from being perfect – some reviews highlight issues with the management being a bit aggressive or unwelcoming, which could put a dampener on your night out. Plus, while the food's alright, it doesn't always deliver that extra wow factor, and the atmosphere might feel a tad lacking compared to its heyday as a Spoons. All in all, if you're after an inexpensive, straightforward pub experience in North London, it's worth a try, but maybe keep an eye out for the vibe on the day you visit to ensure it's a pleasant one.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer is spot on and reasonably priced, making it a great spot for a casual pint after work.
  • The staff can be really welcoming and friendly, especially the bar team who know how to make you feel at home.
  • It's got that classic pub vibe with additions like a darts board and pool table, plus it's been a community favourite since 1988.
  • They offer promotions and events, keeping things lively and giving you a reason to pop in regularly.
Cons
  • Some folks have had run-ins with the management, which can make the atmosphere feel a bit off-putting at times.
  • The overall vibe might not live up to its former glory under new ownership, with a few mentioning it's lost some of that lively spark.
  • While the food is decent, it doesn't always hit the mark in terms of excitement or variety.

Used to be a brilliant Spoons but now under new ownership, although it still looks the same. Decent food but sorely lacking the atmosphere of previous.

Decent backstreet pub, normal people enjoying a pint (or a wine) after work. No vacuous hipsters, no pop-ups just beer at a decent price.

The bar lady and bar man are amazing, but the manager is very bad and aggressive. I ask the bar lady for her name to write a review and the manager started shouting at me and made me feel very unwelcome. Avoid this pub at all cost . I will not be drinking here again.the male manager needs to attend an customer service course .

If ever in the Wood Green, London area, be sure to stop by. We were in North London for just a couple of days and The Toll Gate was within walking distance. Jordan and his crew were really friendly, they made us feel so welcomed. The beer was excellent too! My husband had some "Proper" English beer and I had some delicious apple cider. Highly recommended this place

The Toll Gate in Turnpike lane. Recently sold by Spoons. New owners haven’t changed much bar putting in a darts board and a pool table. Means the place has remained cheap while managing to actually get better. Nice decor. Chill spot with great staff. I’m in a booth so hence the random pics. And the carpet is refreshingly twee.
