About This Pub

Oh, The Steam Packet – it's one of those pubs that really warms the cockles, isn't it? Tucked away in Norwich since 1836, it's got that perfect blend of traditional charm and a bit of flair, with an upstairs restaurant that's just the ticket for enjoying some top-notch British grub with European influences. From what folks are saying, the food steals the show – think hearty sharing plates like rib of beef that melts in your mouth or those brilliant bar snacks that pack a flavour punch. Pair that with a solid line-up of beers and wines, and you've got yourself a cracking evening. The staff are dead helpful too, adding to that welcoming atmosphere, and it's great that dogs are welcome if you're popping in with your pooch. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; a few have mentioned the prices feeling a bit on the high side for what you get, especially if you're sharing and it doesn't quite stretch as far as you'd like. And with its spot by a busy road, it might not be the quietest for an outdoor pint. Still, for anyone looking for a solid night out in Norwich, it's well worth a visit – just keep an eye on the bill and maybe plan for indoors if you're after some peace.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is wonderfully cosy and welcoming, making it feel like a proper local spot that's been a Norwich favourite since 1836.
  • The food is an absolute treat – fresh, seasonal British dishes with European flair, like those melt-in-the-mouth sharing ribs and scrumptious haggis scotch eggs that everyone's raving about.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from pints of Guinness and great beers on tap to an interesting wine list that pairs nicely with the meals.
  • The service is spot on, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home, and it's a bonus that it's dog-friendly for those who like to bring their four-legged mates along.
  • The upstairs restaurant with its open kitchen adds a lovely touch, creating an intimate vibe that's perfect for a relaxed dinner or special occasion.
Cons
  • Prices can feel a bit steep for the portions, like when you're sharing dishes for a meal that might not quite fill you up, especially if you're expecting better value.
  • It's situated by a busy road, which means the outside seating might be noisier than you'd hope, potentially disrupting that cosy feel on a summer evening.

The Steam Packet is a fabulous pub, with a great selection of keg beer. The team are charming and there’s a decent amount of seating outside. It’s our favourite pub in town.

One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. The Steam Packet nails that rare balance between cosy and elevated. The pub’s atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a dining room that feels intimate but never cramped – the art and overall vibe are spot on. The open kitchen adds to the charm, giving you a glimpse into the action. The food? Outrageously good. We had the langoustines with wild garlic – unforgettable – followed by a perfectly cooked steak and some of the best chips I’ve had in ages. Their home lager was crisp and refreshing, honestly one of the best I’ve tried in a long time, and the wine list is equally impressive. What really sets this place apart is the portion size and the cooking style: generous, honest plates that are simple in the best way – full of flavour, creativity, and care. The Steam Packet is absolutely worth a visit

Visited recently for a 60th birthday meal. Haggis scotch egg was definitely worth a mention & the sharing steak was cooked to perfection. However, we were served one bowl of chips & one bowl of mixed leaf salad leaves to share between 2 people, for £70, I didn't think this offered good value for money & a bowl each wouldn't of gone amiss. In summary, intimate restaurant with good food, just needed a little bit extra to give it 5 stars!

It's becoming a regular for me as the vibes from the whole environment is grand. I also went to their Burns Night and gauged heavily on a number of dishes (the photos). The outside is blessed with that Vitamin D lump of a sun which is perfect for the summer times. Granted it's by a busy road that can have boy racers on a Sunday in particular but it doesn't really impact the experience for myself. Jamie approved 👌🏻

We visited this lovely pub on our recent trip to Norwich and had a lovely evening. Great beers on tap and in cans, and an interesting wine selection. We ate bar snacks and they really were excellent, very well rounded and full of flavour. Pork croquettes were sublime and the bread selection was excellent. A lovely scoop of ice cream finished off the evening very nicely. Being dog friendly is a huge win too 😊
