About This Pub

Ah, The Star – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Oxford, you know? I've got to say, the beers are top drawer; there's a fantastic selection that keeps you coming back for more, and it's all at an affordable price, which is always a win. The staff are absolute stars themselves, so chatty and helpful that it makes the whole place feel welcoming, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening. That beer garden is a real highlight too – it's spacious and ideal for a laugh with friends, especially if you're lucky with the weather. And they've got some decent non-alcoholic choices, which is thoughtful for those in the group who are driving or just taking it easy. On the flip side, though, it's a shame about the food; you're stuck with just snacks at the bar, so if you're after a hearty bite, you might have to plan ahead. The toilets aren't quite up to par either, and while the old-school furnishings give it that charming, traditional feel, they could use a refresh for those who prefer things a bit more polished. Overall, it's a solid spot for a good night out, especially if you're into live music or meeting up before a gig – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go, but keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a great choice of pints that really hit the mark for a proper pub experience.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and quick to help out, making you feel right at home.
  • There's a lovely beer garden that's perfect for gathering with mates or larger groups, especially on a sunny day in Oxford.
  • Non-alcoholic options are well thought out, so it's inclusive for everyone in the group who's skipping the booze.
  • It's a buzzing spot for pre-gig drinks or just catching up with friends, with a lively atmosphere that keeps things fun.
Cons
  • It's a bit limited on food, with only snacks available at the bar, so you might need to head elsewhere for a proper meal.
  • The loos could do with some improvement – they're not up to scratch, which is a small but noticeable downside.
  • The furnishings are quite old and worn, which adds character for some but might feel a tad dated if you're after something more modern.

Busy friendly pub just off Oxford's famous Cowley Road, with a great choice of beers. Popular for pre-gig drinks and meeting friends; a decent amount of tables and garden space for bigger groups. Good non alcoholic options for those of the party who need that. Snacks at the bar but no food; fine to bring your own in.

The Star. One of the few propper pubs in town with a good pint, a nice garden and a no-queue policy. Strongly suggest.

I like this place and appeared to be very popular with their young local customers. The friendly bartender immediately helped me with my elderly wheelchair bound mother. The furnishings inside were very old and added to the atmosphere. The beautiful beer garden at the back just added to the entire experience.

Fantastic live music and some lovely real ale. Only the slightly lacking loos kept it from 5 stars but don't let that put you off, it's a great pub.
